Catholic Mass: Need Reading Suggestions

Audrey, on April 14, 2016 at 2:06 PM Posted in Planning 0 8

I'm looking for suggestions for a first reading for a Catholic wedding mass. I think we're going to go with Corinthians 12:31-13:13 for our second reading and John 2:1-11 for the gospel. We're also considering Psalm 34, but are open to suggestions on that one as well. We did receive a book from our parish with options; however I wasn't thrilled about any of them.

Many thanks!

Were they suggestions, Audrey or requirements?

    We used this one:

    John 13:34-35

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”

I would say before you really look into this, you ask your parish if you can deviate from their suggestions.

Ditto Celia and Tina - check with your parish about whether you can pick an option not on the list. I don't remember exactly but I'm pretty sure for a nuptial Mass, there's a specific set of readings you can pick from, which is probably what the church gave you.

@Tina and @Celia they were suggestions, not requirements. We were told we could pick anything from the bible.

They seriously didn't give you a list? Usually you should pick something from the Old Testament for the 1st reading, New Testament for the 2nd, and then something from one of the Gospels.

Ok, we rec'd the same guidelines as Rebecca posted:

The readings at a Catholic wedding liturgy are a proclamation of God’s Word and of the Church’s faith about marriage. For this reason, they are limited to readings from the scriptures (the Bible). There are nine options for the first reading from the Old Testament, thirteen options for the second reading from the New Testament and ten choices for the Gospel. You choose one from each of these categories.

@Nicole: Yes, we did receive a list (book) from our parish. There weren't many suggestions in the book for the first reading that I liked. If you have any that you could pass along, that would be great.

Agree with PP about speaking to the church. Our priest gave us a book with several readings to pick from.
