Catering Problems

Chantelle, on February 20, 2012 at 8:40 AM Posted in Planning 0 6

So, I am getting married in Sedona, AZ...They don't have too many options for catering and the food that I have tried, I don't think the quality is that good. And the food that I know is gonna be good is too expensive ($70/plate). I am on a tight budget of no more than $7,000 but I am trying to keep it at $6,000. My FMIL and my mom suggested that we cook the food...I don't want anyone that is going to be attending my wedding to be cooking. They were thiniking of making mostaccoli (sp?) and lasagna and freezing the sauce a couple days before and the day of, cooking noodles and baking the meals. I think that is too much to handle. My mom also suggested that we cook the food and hire a waiting staff to serve and heat up the food the day of. I just feel so far behind in my planning. I have 7 months and only have a venue and my dress. It's starting to overwhelm me and stress me out. I don't know what to do :-/ Any suggestions?

Please do not cook your own wedding food. I was a caterer when I did my own wedding, and I would never, ever do it again. Your venue may not even allow it because most of these venues require insurance.

I would have a conversation with the venue to ask who they would recommend for your budget; then start cutting the guest list, which will save you money in other areas too.

Even if you venue allows it, it's going to be very stressful for everybody. Your mom won't be able to enjoy your wedding if she's busy cooking. Offer a simpler meal. Cut the guest list. Cut the decorations, favors, take a basic photography package.

How many caterers have you tried?

I know I don't want my mom to cook. My venue did give me suggestions and I can have whatever food I want cause I am getting married in a park. I went to a bridal expo thing up there this weekend and I tried almost all of the caterers that are within my budget. I can't cut the guest list really now cause I already sent out a lot of save the dates. I think FH and I are gonna go there and try a couple of the caterers food and make a decision, but I am worried cause I didn't like some of the food they had out for the bridal expo. I might just have to settle. Thanks for the advice Smiley smile

I wouldn't worry about the expo. Just set up appointments with everybody and see what they have to offer. We got married in a 5 star restaurant, and when we did the tasting I did not like ALL the food.

Another thing is that they might be willing to work with you if you say "My budget is $X, what can you do". Perhaps they can offer something you didn't even think about.

Instead of more traditional wedding caterers, what about a local restuarant? If your mom suggested pasta, maybe there is an italian restuarant that can cater a past buffet?

Thanks Mrs. S I think I will do that...I was just feeling unaccomplished and overwhelmed. I am gonna make some appointments to try more of thier food. @ Sara P. I was thinking about that but I live 2 1/2 hours away from where I am getting married and there aren't really any restaurants up there that I love :-/ And if I were to have someone cater from down here it would cost me a lot more for travel.
