Catering cost too much?

Brittny, on February 10, 2017 at 12:06 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 34

I have not booked a caterer for my wedding yet! There are reasons however I don't want to go off topic. The caterer was very clear and gave me a quote of $15 pp for a buffet style dinner with my choice of chicken entree, 2 sides, a salad, and bread rolls. This includes his staff and service for 2 hours and free delivery and set up! We have 160 guests who are invited, and that would add up to about $2400 all together. When FH told his mother and step dad they were very surprised and thought that it is a crazy price. So I'm wondering if it is too much? Everything else was more expensive. We can pay for it but his mom wanted to help by putting in $500, this was before I received this quote. So that is why I want to take them into much consideration when choosing a caterer.

That's...a really good price, and an EXCELLENT price depending on where you are. For reference, we're paying $60 pp for a choice of 3 entrees, 2 soups/salads. Heck, we're paying $15 pp just for passed apps during our cocktail hour. Hotel wedding in OKC.

Are you only having chicken? I would strongly suggest more than one entree choice.

Ours is $32 pp plus service charge. I agree with @FutureMrsB.. I would try to have at least 1 more option other than chicken.

This is about average for my area for a bbq buffet style. We get two meats and two sides were buns and bbq sauce set up and teardown etc plates, silverware. Catering is usually top three largest expense.

I work with caterers on a regular basis and that is actually a very good deal, on the cheaper end of the spectrum.

Yes I am also concerned about having 1 entree choice. We will talk more about the package we have in person at the tasting and I will definitely check in to that. Should it be another type of meat entirely or another chicken style entree?

PP charges start at about $150 PP in my area, so I'd grab that deal in a heartbeat. His parents have been out of circulation for a while if they think that price is crazy.

That's pretty much as cheap as it gets. It's an unheard of price in many areas. I would be a little worried about the food quality at that price to be honest.

The buffet option at our venue is $106pp. That does include apps, but even still I'd say your price is pretty awesome.

@Emily S. Yes we will find out and make our decision to have them after the tasting. If we like the food, we will definitely book them. Our wedding date is actually the only one available in the summer so we don't want to waste time. Our reception is located in a small suburb and they are family owned. I also have a 5 tier cake priced at $580 at an amazing bakery around the corner as well so the prices are very affordable in the suburbs.

Holy cow, that is insanely cheap! I can't imagine finding something like that for under about $45 per person at the very cheapest. Our food comes out to about ten times as expensive per person as what you are getting.

OP, the caterer I originally wanted charged $18 pp for that exact same type of meal ($20 pp for a second entree) so it's definitely not unheard of. The only reason we didn't book them was because we ended up selecting a venue with an in-house caterer. Their meals are $24 pp which still isn't bad.

I think I would croak if I lived in a more expensive area! I about shit a brick when one company quoted me at $65 pp... lol.

Yeah that's pretty cheap. Ours is about $38 pp (not including alcohol, we have to provide that)

That's the cheapest caterer we could find, with the best quality of course.

There were cheaper, but the food was meh.

We're in LA and ours is $75 pp for a buffet. Two entrees, a salad, 3 sides and 3 different passed appetizers for 160 people.

That's a steal. the cheapest I was quoted was $36 PP for 4 entrees buffet style (mostly chicken options). Everything else was an add-ons, so more $$. If we wanted roasted beef it was an extra $3.50 pp
