Cash Discounts- anyone tried it?

Melissa, on November 12, 2014 at 11:53 AM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13

So I'm working with a wedding planner who gets me her discounted rates on services to begin with, but I'm just wondering if anyone has offered to pay cash for some things and managed to get some money off the price? I didn't know if that would be a faux pas to even ask since I'm already getting a discounted rate, but I figured it never hurts to ask and I know from my mom being self-employed for years that cash talks, especially if you're willing to pay up front. I was just thinking maybe if I offered cash on something like cake or rentals if they would cut the price down a little bit more. Student loan repayments start this month so dear god I need all the help I can get!! hahaha

Yup - I've asked a lot of my vendors if I pay cash would there be any additional off - can't hurt to ask.

One of my décor companies gave me a discount for paying cash.

Actually one of my vendors does decrease the price by something like $300 if you don't pay with a credit card since that is what they pay in credit card processing fees.

All of our vendors offer a cash discount. They were able to give us a written receipt as long as an email verifying that we paid x amount on such and such day so we have some sort of paper trail.

Dang, Janeen, that's awesome! Ok cool, thanks ladies. I'm going to give it a try when we go for the cake testing and see what they say!

A check is as good as cash and gives you a paper trail. A handwritten receipt? Not so much.

Well I'd obviously have a contract as well as record of the payment in cash.

We paid some things with a credit card (that was being paid off) and some things with check. Almost all the things that got paid with a credit card included a 3 percent fee for using the card.

As long as they give you a contract, I think it's great! I got a cash discount on my Dress (got $100 off plus 25% off my veil), cash discount on our Officiant (like $200), and a 5% cash discount with our Limo, even though we were already getting a 20% discount because we were referred from our DJ. We would have paid up front with our other larger things and asked for a discount, but sometimes you don't want to give someone thousands of dollars up front. All of these were under $1,500 so we had no problem paying up front. Maybe I'll ask our Photographer if we can get something extra in our package if we pay her in full now? Smiley smile We're already getting a crap ton of extras from our DJ because he was in a good mood that day and emailed me all these promises (yay my persistence on getting things in writing!). We already signed our contract with her but maybe we can ask if we can get a small album or some prints since we still have a $2k balance...

But yes, always ask for discounts! Preferred vendors, booking so early, paying up front, etc.
