Carnations..... Cheap? Too tacky?

Chrissy4985, on May 1, 2015 at 5:19 PM Posted in Planning 0 36

Hello ladies.

My fi bought me carnations about a week ago and they are hanging in there. They smell really nice and haven't withered much at all. I think they are cute and found they come in several colors. They are also reasonable in price. My question is...... Is it tacky to have a wedding bouquet filled with primarily carnations? Let me know what you think.

I think it's nicer than fake flowers and brooch bouquets. It's all about personal taste and style.

Cheap / inexpensive doesn't mean tacky. It can be pulled off very tastefully and beautifully, just like the most expensive flower can be thrown into a cheap and tacky looking bouquet! It's a great way to cut costs and you can dress it up with different colors and flowers IMO

I absolutely love carnations! It didn't even cross my mind that people consider them tacky.

Edited: I forgot to mention that carnations are actually the most expensive flower in my bouquet because they're miniature plum colored carnations (probably dyed?). They're more expensive than the ivory roses, alstroemeria (3 different colors- also called Peruvian lilies), etc. that are going to be in all of the arrangements. Go with whatever you find beautiful!

It can certainly be done in an elegant way. Carnations are flowers like every other flower. Any flowers are better than fake flowers in my opinion anyway.

I don't care for them as they don't fit the feel of our wedding. I think if you are going for a wildflower kind of look they are great!

If I didn't love roses so much I would have gone with carnations. I think they are fine.

I love carnations! I'm using them as filler instead of having greenery in all my centerpieces. Also, its the flower of my sorority so I will be have my sisters who attend in enchantress pink carnation corsages.

I love carnations! I don't know why they have such a bad rep...they're a beautiful flower! Definitely use them! Especially if it means saving some $$!

I like that they have a ruffly look to them. I think if you paired them with babies breath they would look dated (or retro?) for sure, but by themselves or with just roses like the picture below they could look fresh and interesting. Why can't carnations make a come back?

My florist asked if I wanted carnations and I said heck no, they're ugly! Then she showed me a variegated carnation (white with burgundy tips) and I told her I love it, let's incorporate it. So to answer your question, no carnations aren't tacky. They can be very beautiful.

Carnations are lovely, there are even directions online how to make them appear as a peony which is like 5 times more expensive.

Carnations are very affordable and beautiful, I don't think they look tacky if done tastefully.

Im using them. My girls will be carrying carnation and babys breath bouquets! And the boutineres/corsages will have carnations as well. Very cost effective, (at least in my area/florists) but still pretty.
