Candy buffet question...

sarao, on June 22, 2010 at 6:19 PM Posted in Planning 0 38

What should the guests put the candy in? I know a lot of people use the plastic bags, but what size? I also see some people use the chinese take-out containers, is that practical? Which one is better?

I think the plastic bags are very practical and inexpensive. I did my own and put labels on them. My only regret is not getting a smaller size. #1 I knew the bags were kinda tall but I didn't realized they opened as wide as they did. #2 I didn't expect people to be so inconsiderate. I saw a few folks with bags so full they couldn't even close them. Never mind the rest of the guests huh? I had a ton of bags left over but hardly even candy which leads me to believe that probably half of our guests didn't get any candy at all. And I bought about 50 lbs of candy!

That is a lot of candy Ladylee. Whoa. What size do you suggest? Were your bags the one pounders?

I'm going to use these: http://www.nstatepackaging.com/Bags-Coffee/Tin-Tie-BagsStrips/1-lb-White-TIN-TIE-Candy-p6274074.html They are super cheap & you can decorate the outsides to match your wedding.

This may be a silly question...What is a candy buffet? I'd never heard of one till I joined WW.

A candy buffet is a table with bowls or containers full of candy that your guest can select from & take home. Smiley laugh

Ok so it's exactly what it sounds like. I've never seen one before but it sounds like a cute idea.

I never knew it was so popular until I came here. I knew I wanted one, but my wedding is on Halloween & what kind've wedding would that be without a candy bar?

Honestly I wouldn't have spent extra money on a candy buffet (i am super cheap and on a strict budget) but, my big sis is giving it as a gift. So, now I am totally into it. My FH says "It is an event in itself" and it really is at this point. I am super excited.

Oh Amanda, that is a lot of bags for the price which I love but I am afraid of those 1lb bags. I hear adults turn into total children around these candy buffets and I don't want them to go crazy filling up a 1lb bag to the top ya know?

I totally understand about the strict budget part. I lost my job about a month ago & my wedding is 4 months away. Not having money this close to the wedding sucks! Good luck with your wedding though!

I am thinking of using candy (from the Knot) as a favour. The wrapped chocolate small Hersey chocolates. I was just planning on putting them in a bowl and letting people take by hand on their way home. I would say small, small thin brown bags with maybe a sticker (you can also get those made up from the Knot on the bag). The bigger the bag the more they will take!! lol

They were not one pounders but they were pretty tall. I wouldn't recommend getting those unless you literally buy one pound of candy per guest - which some bloggers recommend. But I took my queue from a blog that said to buy 1/4 to 1/2 lb of candy per guest. We had a guest list of approx 200 so I did 1/4 lb. I honestly think I could have done 75-100 lbs and still not have a lot left over but I didn't want to go overboard. I spent just over $200 on candy. Here is a pic of the bags I did. Unfortunately I no longer have the packaging so I can't tell you what size they were. I would definitely go shorter than this unless you're doing close to 1 lb per guest.

I had a candy bar and it turned out amazing!!! I found bags at Michaels that were really inexpensive and the perfect size and you still had room for a label. I also used www.candywarehouse.com to order the candy and it was REALLY reasonable... and you need a lot of it!

Yea I'd go with a 1/4 lb or 1/2 lb bag otherwise you're gonna have guests that'll have to go without. I love the chinese takeout boxes. I seen them in black & fell in love. But unfortunately, a candy buffet is not in my future. I think we're doing m&m's on the tables because it's gonna be close to time for halloween candy to be put out & I'll be able to get the black ones for cheap. right now its $5.99 for less than 1 lb of black MM at Factory Card Outlet. I wanted to order the personalized one but for a 5lb box of personalized M&Ms it was $150. Theres no way I'd pay that price, I's just assume buy a ton of multi-colored ones and dump them into bowls and leave a note to enjoy. LOL.

I went with the pics below, the first pic is the bag holder, and for the actual bags I did the largest size organza bags I could find. LL that was very rude of some of your guests! Sorry that happened.

We have a little over 100 guests and 350 bags so each person can fill at least 2 bags. Im sticking with about 35 pounds of candy.

I got white paper lunch bags that are about 1/2 the size of the normal ones you buy at the grocery store. I got them at Flower Factory. I am planning on 1 pound per guest.

And keep in mind when buying bags labeled by weight that different candies weigh very different amounts. For example, gummy candies are VERY heavy in comparison to others and they can get really expensive really quick and not take up a lot of space. Then you have things like gumballs that have air in the middle and can be really inexpensive.
