Candles vs. Bouquets

Eleanor, on December 9, 2013 at 12:35 PM Posted in Planning 0 31

Originally, I was just going to find an alternative to flower bouquest. However, my budget expanded a bit and I realized that I really want a bouquet for at least myself. I have 7 bridesmaids though so I may not be able to get a bouquet for each bridesmaid. Would it look awkward to have the bridesmaids alternate between bouquest and a candle? The wedding will be outside at dusk so I think the candles would look cool. I've already checked with the venue and they'll allow the candles.

I don't really know. I'm actually stuck on this one. I don't know how I feel about the bridesmaids holding candles.... and I am in the group of all bridesmaids being the same. But I don't necessarily think anyone will think it's a BAD idea or anything like that.

You want them to hold candles in their bare hands? Please tell me they are LED or that you have something to prevent them getting burned? Wax is hot!

If you do, then it would look great!

Are these like, the long stick candles with open flame? I would be very nervous about it just because my ass is clumsy.

Truffle + walking with open flame in dress and heels = potential for ruined wedding...

I've never seen BMs holding candles before. I think it could look very beautiful. Just make sure it's in some kind of jar so the wind doesn't bow them out

I hadn't thought into the specifics but I would never have them hold something that would burn them. There'd either be a holder or it would be LED. I can get a little crazy when it comes to my wedding but I'm not a total bridezilla haha.

    I vote LED

Hairspray and open flame, is not a good idea, lol.

I actually think it'd look very nice. But being outside, there's the chance of it blowing out which will not look as pretty as if it were lit. Just something to think about.

The thing that worries me about the candles is .. they probably won't stay lit when they walk down the aisle. What if it is windy? They may end up standing there with an unlit candle.

To save money on a bouquets for the girls, they could carry a single flower or just a couple. Simple, classic, elegant. I have seen some people just use hydrangeas (which are inexpensive) or have babys breath bouquets.

Good point! LED would probably be easy anyway as I'm already using quite a few in other places and I could just use them twice.

I think if you do something with candles that's within reason, then this could be really unique and cool. Just factor in the shoes they'll be wearing (aka potential of falling), a container for the candle, etc.

@Rustic Bride: I'm letting them pick their shoes and I won't make anyone carry a candle that's not comfortable with it.

@Soon to be: The single flower idea is a good one! I want my bouquet to be roses so a single rose would be great!

If you are going to do candles, maybe do a tea light in a mason jar or something like that.

My Bridesmaids are all getting one rose each to walk down the isle. Then after the ceremony I will have them put all the roses in a vase, and from there my mom will make a bouquet out of that to toss. I want to keep my bouquet!!

That's kind of an awesome idea! I've never seen/heard of that and I think it's very unique.

Only other option I had would be to purchase single stems and wrap 5 or so of them together for each bridesmaids. IDK how creative or invested you are, but that's what I'm doing. A lot of places will sell single stems to you for around $1 a piece too depending on what you want.

From a DIY bride - if your budget has expanded I would suggest you do artificial flowers for the bridesmaids. Check out Hobby Lobby they have a cream colored Ranunculus bundle of 10 stems on sale for 4.99 and they are very beautiful. I just think something could go wrong with a candle unless it's LED and do they have to hold it throughout the ceremony?

@MJGARCIA: I don't shop at Hobby LObby for personal reasons but I will definitely look around at artificial flowers. I would have them hold the candle throughout the ceremony but I'm trying to keep my ceremony as short as possible.

It looks like I have a lot of options! Thanks everyone!

I love the candle idea! I agree that they should be put in some type of jar to prevent being blown out and for safety's sake. Here are some ideas:

ETA: Just search "candle bouquet" on pinterest.

    I love the lantern idea

I'd use battery operated candles over open-flame if I was going to go with a single candle though.
