Cancelling our wedding. What do i do with my wedding dress and veil?

SO - due to Covid restrictions now in place in New Jersey, we are cancelling our March 2021 wedding. We will likely be going the city hall route, instead. I spent a ton of money on my [dream] wedding dress and veil that I absolutely adore - but feel I would look absolutely silly going to City Hall in it. As a Covid bride, having everything taken away, I feel like I can't let this pandemic take my dream wedding dress moment away, too! Would I look like an idiot if I wore them??

For those of you who are pivoting and changing up your wedding - what are you doing with your wedding dresses?!

XO,

Heartbroken Bride

Check to find out about different towns around you ( not my state). When my first wedding went south due to troublesome in-laws, we went off on our honeymoon a few days early, planning to get a license and marry at a friend's local city hall.
So we left our fancy duds in NH. Only to find we had a choice of inside the semi-retired judge's office, huge, paneled old wood and gorgeous, and about 15X25, or in the early may blossoming everything garden with the lawn stretching out to a view of 11,000 to 14,000 snow capped peaks, on a 70 degree day. If I had known, I would not have pulled out a white eyelet peasant skirt, to match my top, and over my hiking shorts and ballet flats I put on to replace my hiking boots. Friends shopped for someplace nearby and nice. They assumed we would bring our clothes, and we though we would be in a less nice place. The judges secretary cut boughs off a pink flowering cherry bush for me to hold, since they had about 40 different flowering bushes, so we got married between a bank of spirea and forsythias. Our lesson: Don't assume.

At this point in life if I saw a bride at city hall in a stunning wedding dress I would think sh** covid killed her wedding. That is all I would think. So wear your dress, hire a photographer to take some awesome pics, and then in Mar 2022 have a huge party and wear it again. I am so sorry this is happening to you but believe me no one will think its weird. They will just think covid ruined yet another thing. Good luck to you!

We just can't go through with spending the $80,000 we agreed to on the venue and only have 45 people show up. Then, risking their health. That's why we're cancelling.

We paid for 150 of our loved ones to come, eat, dance, and celebrate with us. That's not what we'll get if we continue on with the restrictions.

There are 0 rules When it comes to getting married during a pandemic! I believe you should do whatever it is to make you happy, like someone else suggested they heard of people going to city hall in a limo! why not?! I feel for you because I am in the same boat but really there is no right or wrong right now.

Ah! I see. That makes sense. Our wedding is way smaller. I originally wanted only 40 to 50 but we settled on a max of 70 people and that can be easily cut back for us. So, we have a slightly easier situation. I’m so sorry you’re dealing with this.

You look amazing in that dress! I would wear it 100%. You won't look foolish and, who knows? Maybe in a year or so you'll want to have even a small ceremony and wear it then too.

I don't see the harm in wearing it ...and have an amazing photoshoot and save the memories.

Maybe have a lush intimate reception as well?? (possibly outdoor?)

    Wishing you all the best,

    Uju Smiley heart

Go ahead and wear it! Even if some people would think it's too much for a City Hall wedding (who cares?) you get a pass due to Covid-19. Lots of people are in the same situation as you and everyone will understand.

Wear your dress and create your own pictures with Photograher. At this point as Covid Brides anything we choose goes, makes sense and people understand.

Our wedding was due October 2020 and postponed for March 2021. I am on my second invite due to COVID-19. I don’t have a dress and Plan to rent. My favors have original wedding date 10-17-2020. In January I plan to visit venue.
Jessica - Wear your dress and veil and then you can either sell it or donate to army wives. We have many options now. However, your wedding will be beautiful cause the pictures speak volumes and will stay with you forever.
    My Best to youEve

Hi you. Why not have the regular city hall procedure in festive clothes and a big bash later on in the year or in 2022 where you wear your stunning gown? This is totally standard here in Germany and completely unrelated to Covid. Many couples go to the registar's office (because this is the only way to be legally married) and have a church wedding or a free ceremony weeks, months or even years later. The mum of my godchild got married in church three years after her city hall wedding, and of course she wore an amazing bridal gown (and we all kind of expected her to Smiley smile) Friends of ours are planning on having a free wedding ceremony at the occasion of their 10-year wedding anniversary, and a white wedding dress is definitely in the cards. I understand that there are cultural differences between the US and Germany at play here, but unusual times require unusual measures, don't you think? Smiley smile

Thoughts from a Momma: you look beautiful in your dress! As you mentioned, you are now thinking about wearing it to City Hall! Yeah! I also feel you should wear it & enjoy your day! Covid has re-written everything we knew about social gatherings! It is called life! It doesn’t always turn out the way we plan in our head...but that doesn't mean that you have to give everything up...You are now on Plan B...I would do a drive by City Hall and look at some cool locations for photo ops! Is City Hall near a place where you & your fiancee have memories? A bar, restaurant, park, church? I would try to incorporate that into some photos. By pivoting in this, you have learned that things don’t always go as planned & there are things out of your control...and you can still be happy & blessed! I would keep your wedding dress...you may some day have a little girl who will want to try it on! (One of my darling daughter’s is engaged & frustrated with how venues won’t take deposits more than 18 months out...she had an appt. to try on dresses yesterday & canceled & decided this summer would be a better time, since she will be a fall 2022 bride)
Also, remember that others are saddened for you...perhaps you can include some via live video or have a party at a later date! I applaud you for making the tough decision to cancel as it isn’t prudent to spend so much money without your beloved guests. You will be a great mom in the hopefully near future! 😘

    Hi Cathy,

Just wanted to thank you for your super thoughtful response. You really got me with the future mom talk! I look forward to becoming a mom one day and sharing that dress moment with a potential daughter!

You're right - this is our day and I'm going to wear the dress of my dreams ... to marry the man of my dreams. Thankfully, our city hall is quite beautiful! It's in the heart of our favorite city, the one we happen to live in!

Again, thanks for making my day. I'm looking forward to my first alterations appointment this weekend!
