Can someone please tell me why cake stands and toppers are so darn expensive?

I ordered my cake stand and topper today. And the less expensive ones I found so far start at $35 dollars! Like omg!! I don't even think I will have a use for them after the wedding. Has anybody else ran into this problem?

    Hobby Lobby has them pretty cheap especially if you go when they have their 50% off sale. which is like every other week.

    ETA: We didn't even use a cake stand. We didn't really feel the need

    You can put it in a curio cabinet or a china closet after you're married. I actually did a whole vignette on the shelf of a display cabinet I have. It has my original invitation, a small, silver framed wedding portrait, the cake topper, the champagne flutes, the cake cutting set, and a few of the silk flowers from my bouquet (the only silks I had at my wedding were in my bouquet). I placed two or three tiny boxes on the shelf, covered the entire area with a piece of white moire fabric, sprinkled some diamond dust over the fabric, and then arranged the mementos. Some pieces were elevated on the boxes, and others weren't. It really looked beautiful (especially when I turned the cabinet light on and the diamond dust was illuminated), and it made me smile every time I saw it.

    I just made my cake stands (3 of them) and my cake topper for less than $20. DIY it!

    Check amazon and pinterest for a DIY stand. I saw one where she used a candle holder and a plate from the dollar store to make a pretty cake stand.

    We got super lucky and didn't have to spend any money on both. We used his grandparents old cake topper and had our cake lady redo the veil. The cake stand we got for free as well from a family friend that owned a landscaping business and cut all our log centerpieces and the stand for us for nothing. Maybe try asking if his family or yours has something you could borrow?

    Bottom line, "Cause someone will pay that much". If no one was willing to pay it, they'd charge less.

    I got my topper at a yard sale when I was a kid for a couple of bucks cause I thought it was cute and I figured I'd get married one day. I wish I had thought about picking up one of the countless cake stands I've seen when I've gone thrift shopping pre-engagement, but of course then I had no reason to buy them.

    Look at yard sales and thrift shops.

    I'm having this same battle-rent a silver cake stand for $30 or keep the silver covered cardboard from bakery? Cake topper that I love on Etsy is $29-39 (w/glitter). Not sure it's worth it either. But my alternative of fresh flowers seems more costly and definitely not re-usable.

    @Centerpiece that sounds lovely!

    We are skipping both the topper and the stand - it's a three tier cake so I don't think we need a stand, and when I looked at toppers I also thought they were really expensive! Our baker is going to make a couple of fondant flowers to put on top. Similar to the attached photo on the right, but the flowers will be white anemones with blue centres.

    We are printing out our cake topper on FH's 3-D printer. If you have a design in mind, check with local maker spaces or libraries and see if they can print it out for you. The real cost of the materials is in cents...so don't let them charge you too much $$.

    Okay so I just left Michael's and they didn't have any that I liked, and Hobby Lobby didn't have stands, just platters and now on my way to Wally World ( Walmart).
