Can i alter this on my dress?

Elizabeth, on March 7, 2013 at 3:21 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 11

So I found the perfect dress at a vintage shop, the only problem is its got a darn corset back that I HATE!!!! The dress is all lace and I don't think it looks good together. Now, obviously I need the room the corset back allows for, but I could lose twenty five pounds, maybe... if I could get some motivation lol. In case that don't happen do you ladies think there is anyway to alter the dress to take out the corset back?

I think the corset could be taken out, but you could call a seamstress and ask, before you purchase the dress

My dress is from DB and it has a corset back (I love it but that is just me) however, I saw a review on the website for the dress that says their alterations department was going to take the corset back out for the bride and add a zipper back so I would imagine it could be done for yours as well. Good luck!

I know next to nothing about sewing, but I think taking out the corset back and pulling it together could alter the proportions or the dress (like side seams hitting in the back). But maybe you can take out the corset and have an open back design....(going to find a picture of what I am talking about)

In order to put in a zipper or something like that you have to have extra material. If this is a vintage dress, is there a lot extra at the bottom?? How are you gonna match the material?

Here are some pictures of open back dresses. Do you have a picture of the dress you like? Do you think is could be turned into an open back style? It would require the right style of dress to begin with, a very talented seamstress, and it might not be possible, but could look really good. Just an idea. Again, I know very little about sewing so I could just be talking crazy!

Is there any wiggle room in it to take out the corset and close it in a zipper back? If not, is there any extra material at the bottom to cut off and hem? You could use that to just cover the corset with the unused lace.

You would have to be able to match the fabric in order for it to work. Either from the bottom or from extra fabric

It does have a very long train I could use fabric from. The.corset back is almost not needed so with what you ladies have said sounds like I will be taking lace from the bottom and putting in a button up back! Thanks so much, I already bought the dress because I loved it so much and could have dealt with the corset but now I am super super excitedSmiley smileI would love an open back but this is a strapless dress and I might flirt with that idea and adding sleeves. Oh boy the ideas are flowingSmiley smile

I would contact a bridal store and ask them. They would definitely be able to tell you if it's doable or not. Especially if you are able to tell them the designer of the gown and which gown it is

These are pictures I found of my dress, sadly I also discovered it's a David's Bridal dress, which no offense to any, but I'm afraid I paid too much for this dress and stupidly didn't research before purchasing.... I mean the tag says David's Bridal, IDK why I didn't look at that... Oh well. But look at the pics.... doesn't the lace up back look ridiculous with the lace details? Also my dress is white with a white sash. ugh you can barely see them It's a davids bridal T9211 style back from 2007.
