Calligraphy Is It Worth It???

MrsLaguna, on October 13, 2014 at 9:35 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 20

I am getting ready to order invites and I wanted to know how many of you did calligraphy on your invites? Do you think it was money well spent or a waste? Also how much did you pay for it and where did you do it? I have seen some and they make the invite look incredible so I am deciding if it's worth it or not.

I've been invited to 6 weddings in the past year. Several of them pretty high budget ones. I've never seen calligraphy done on the invitations, and I've never started at an invite long enough that I would have appreciated it if they did. I would say that as incredible as it looks, you are probably going to appreciate it more than any of your guests will. But that is just my take.

I'm not really doing calligraphy, but I have someone hand-adressing my wedding invites, and my STD's. She is amazing, I showed her like 3 different styles I liked on Pinterest and she recreated them all right then and there. She will address my outside and inside envelope for $1 per invite. She is a college student and an artist so I feel good about giving her my business.

If you have a talented friend willing to do it for free or for some wine, do it. Otherwise, I don't think it's worth it.

I am teaching myself calligraphy. If I get good enough by the time I am ready to send out invitations, then I will do it. Otherwise, I won't bother. It's actually pretty fun learning, but it will take a lot of practice to get good enough.

Beautiful. But can cause problems if the post office cannot read the font easily. Mail is sorted at a high rate of speed. Envelopes are trash within seconds of opening.

I used an Etsy calligrapher for my save the dates, and I could not have been more pleased. She did an amazing job, and it was only 75 cents an envelope. I am using her again for the actual invite, and those will be $2.05 an envelope, which includes return address and RSVP card.

I consider it very much money well spent. She had nearly 20 styles to choose from, and we went with something casual and modern for save the dates and will use something more formal for the actual invites.

I cannot stress how happy I was with the decision. The lettering looked so much more expensive than it was. However, I am sure calligraphy isn't that important to everyone. I say, if you have a bit of discretionary funds, put that money toward the things that will make you happiest.

I had calligraphy done for my inivtitations and it looked amazing. So beautiful and unique. I love stationery and wanted the envelopes to look extra special. I think it was $3 per envelope.

Skip it-- only the postal carrier who delivers it and your friend who receives it are ever going to see it. The PC couldn't care less, and your friend is going to say, "Wow!" then rip the envelope open and throw it away. It really seems like a waste of money, to me.

I had calligraphy done for my STDs and invitations. IMO worth every penny. I paid a lot for stationary. For 250 invites I paid around 4K- they had they whole nine, including calligraphy done to the envelopes and the RSVP envelopes. I had a lot of compliments on our invites. A lot of our close family and friends even saved them for memories, which was sweet. Even if we didn't get compliments I wouldn't have cared it's a preference. It's just like making a decision to spend money on a wedding, when you can go have a JOP for very little money. Some people don't understand why people pay so much to have a wedding, when they can go to the JOP for a bargain! That's just my opinion. It's totally your decision. If you love it and it's in your budget go for it!

I had our invites framed, like each insert and had our envelope saying Mr. & Mrs. Joel Miller in calligraphy glued to a board in the frame so they won't slide when we hung it and every time I pass by it I love it! Wish I could post a pic of it!

My 2 cents? Not worth it. The envelopes end up in the trash.

I think mine are being printed in a font that is script-like, but not actually hand written. It's worth it to me to not have to address them myself. Is it worth it for the special touch? no lol.

I have decent handwriting and bought a calligraphy pen at Staples. It makes even the most awkward handwriting look beautiful. I do think it's worth it, whether you DIY or have it done.

My MatronOH just hand-wrote hers in her own cursive writing, and I'll admit that given her fancy background, I was surprised by this.

My MaidOH actually did the calligraphy for mine (60 envelopes total) and all of my invitees loved them. She didn't charge me, but before asking her, I was prepared to pay someone to do them at like $.80 per envelope or something.

She had never done calligraphy before, either, but is very creative and has wonderful penmanship. I sent her a design I liked and some calligraphy pens and she just went with it. If WW starts working with pictures anytime soon, I'll upload a photo of one.

I feel like if you practiced enough, you'd be able to do your own. I feel like it was worth it to add that special touch.

Not worth it... print them at home with a calligraphy type font (if it's that important).

This is the Etsy vendor I went with for the calligraphy that we did on our invites and the font that was used. I didn't have any undelivered invites. To me it was worth it. I received sooooooo many compliments on how beautiful my invites were. It really is a matter of opinion. If you have the extra cash to splurge, why not...that's the way I looked at it.

There's no way I would pay someone to write addresses on an envelope that is going to go in the trash. If I received an invitation with calligraphy, I would appreciate it because I am a font geek, but I know no one else would.

I enjoy doing handlettering, so if I get around to it, I might teach myself a lettering style and do it myself, if not, meh.

I'm with Gamecox. I didn't have a talented friend, so we used a really nice calligraphy font that I downloaded for free and printed our own. I don't think anyone sat there and gave my invites that much thought. Haha!

If I had a friend I could probably buy the pen and have them do it but I really don't know anyone and I think it looks so pretty. I will see if I can find someone other wise I will think about printing them with a nice font.
