Cake toppers - nay or yay?

I don't think that we will be doing a cake topper. We will have flowers instead. I think this decision is personal preference. There are some really cute cake toppers that I have seen (traditional and newer style as well). We actually chose to not have a cake topper based on the cake we are getting. I don't think the cake we chose would look right with a topper (At least not the one that I wanted.) If you are wanting one, by all means, get one. It is YOUR wedding. I, too, have had to realize that I need to do everything the way I want. Enjoy the process!

Now that you mention it, I haven't seen a lot of people doing the old school toppers...but that doesn't mean you shouldn't still go for it. There's nothing wrong w/ the classics.

We did a customized topper from Amazon w/ a chess theme since my FH loves chess. I think couples just like customizing their weddings & adding things that say "Hey! This is us! This is the stuff we like!" Even for the people that want to do the traditional toppers, there's the option to customize them & make them look more like the couple rather than a generic bride & groom. But, they still sell the original options at places like Hobby Lobby & Michaels, so obviously there's still a market for them. I say go for it!

We didn't have a cake topper, it was just decorated with fresh berries and I thought it was perfect!

For our local reception, we had a 50's/60's theme and my hubby found a vintage-style topper for about $20 on eBay:
