Cake tasting costs to buy products?

Jolie, on January 25, 2019 at 11:01 AM Posted in Planning 0 22

Anyone else run into a cost for cake tasting? I don't so much mind this. I think that's fine if they wanna cover the cost of making the items. But anyone else experience not only a cake tasting cost AND a cost per item you taste? I think that's a little ridiculous. What is my $10 for then, serving me the cake during their allotted day/time frame that they only do cake tastings for? Seems dumb to me. She said we can avoid the tasting cost and just buy cupcakes to take home. Soooo forcing me to buy the products basically. I just think this is so odd. Is this common or something that happened to anyone else??

Never heard of either one before. I’ll just go somewhere else.

Our venue included the wedding cake. We had two bakeries that we got to chose from. The tastings from each bakery were complimentary.

Our tasting was $20. It included pieces of every cake flavor she offered as well as a small tasting of all her options for filling. We also got to taste her buttercream icing so we could decide between that or fondant. We decided to use her and the $20 went towards our purchase.

Our bakery offered a cake tasting box that we could take home to sample everything. It cost us $10. If we booked them, which we did, that $10 was applied to our cake total.

$20 each or total? and See I'd be fine with that because it went to your total. I feel like this lady is just forcing people to pay for her products. She didn't say it goes towards the total. That'd be a very specific detail to have left out haha

I would ask if any of these extra charges are being applied to your final total. If not, move on to another baker who won't try to nickel and dime you.

I only went to one cake tasting. It was free. I can see why a bakery would charge for a cake tasting. Theres some people that just set up an appointment for free cake and that wastes their time with potential customers.

Yes a cake TASTING price as you said. Not a cake tasting price and then an additional cost per item price.

My bad, I thought you meant just an overall price. Not per item. That's ridiculous.

Agreed. Problem is there's slim pickings in my area! Hoping to lock one down. The one I had been corresponding with just decided that "she's booked for the entire year", which I think is a load of crap when I had just emailed her a month before that, on top of her poor contacting skills I was willing to push aside (won't receive call inquiries, takes over a week to respond with not even all the answers to my questions). Good riddance! Wish I could get normal service from the bakers in this area!

Yeah seems so strange then just says oh you can come order cupcakes and avoid the cake tasting cost. Well, if I wanted to do that I would just purchase cupcakes from every bakery I wanted to sample... Nobody does that. Idk why I can't just get normal cake vendors!!

$20 total. When we made the appointment for the tasting she never mentioned a charge for the tasting but I had planned on there being one.

One of the bakeries I'll be doing a tasting with normally charges a fee of $25. However, since they're contracted through our venue, they waived the fee even without a guarantee of us going with them.
I would assume the fee is for their labor/supplies/ingredients/taking the time to meet with you and bake goodies based on your preferences. However, I've NEVER heard of a fee for the tasting AND a fee for each item you try, that's absolutely ridiculous!

Agreed with this! Seems odd. I'm glad most think it's weird! I'll keep her in my back pocket just in case cuz she was cheap per serving but also can't do more than a 3 tier cake so I would need a sheet cake as well for my guests. I was hoping to accomplish the whole thing into one cake, but we shall see what other bakeries say also!

She just seems to come with a bunch of conditions. Overcharges for the tasting and she cannot do more than 3 tiers. Like you said, keep her as like a plan c (maybe d,e,or f loll) and keep looking. Good luck on finding someone who will suit your needs!

Most places we looked had a few for the cake tasting (in general not per item, that seems odd). If you booked with them the fee you paid for the tasting was applied to your final payment

I had a cost of $20 but it goes towards the price of the cake if we go with them which we ended up doing

The $10 is for their “wages” to whatever employee is “helping” you

i think bakers are the biggest racket in the wedding business and took my business local to someone “retired” (read as sold her store front but still bakes for cash apparently if you ask her) I found her looking for local bakers on Facebook

the tastings I went to had awful frozen sheet cake and a dot of filling or icing... rarely both and little to no selection...

i was over it by the time I found myself a baker but just got cupcakes because a 1 dozen was cheaper than tasting 2 I could choose flavor instead of having shop dictate it 3 I felt like I got all the cake I paid for lol

im paying 10% of what cheapest baker quoted me to do my cake in vanilla

I’m getting chocolate espresso cake with raspberry purée filling and raspberry buttercream icing and delivery for 10% of what bakeries quoted me to try and force me into a cake I didn’t even think tasted ok, much less good lol

That sounds delicious! Yeah I really can't help but roll my eyes at some of these cake bakers and what they cost and the process of it as you said! It's starting to wear me out and I just wanna be over it. My mom told me to just check out the bakery at the local farmer's market and then this other bakery that doesn't much advertise that they do cakes rather says pastries/pies on their website but they do do cakes. She said that might be a better option than the run-of-the-mill steal your money cake shops that don't in fact use fresh ingredients they just lie and buy bulk professional mix.
