Cake stands? Necessary? Suggestions?

Ok ladies, I have been having this internal debate about cake stands for the last year and hopefully you all can point me in the right direction. I would need between a 14"-16" cake stand. Ok ladies, I have been having this internal debate about cake stands for the last year and hopefully you all can point me in the right direction. I would need between a 14"-16" cake stand. I was a bit sticker shocked by the price of them. I tried looking for a rental and couldn't find one. My baker does not rent them either. I have found a few on sale but then the shipping is ridiculous! I am interested in a white (but will take gold) cake stand. Is this a necessary expense? One bride suggested using a serving tray and flipping it over but I'm nervous about the weight of the cake. Here are the ones i'm considering. I would paint the wood stand. Should I suck it up and buy the cake stand for around $75, do the white tray and flip it over $30, or get the wood stand and diy it for $35? Thoughts!

Look on amazon, look at goodwill, even ask on Facebook. If I could not of found anything I was going to take boxes and cover them in fabric.

No cake stand for us, either. Add it to the Long List of Things That Don't Make You More Married.

My bakery has it come on a nicer gold foil piece. That works for me so I'm skipping a cake stand. :3

Does the venue have something you could use? We ended up using one of their wine barrels!

We got ours at tjmaxx for about $15. I thought about DIY but the cost of supplies would have been about the same as a cheap stand from TJMaxx or Ross.

Also try places like Walmart or Kmart.

We aren't doing one. Our cake baker has a try thing that we can use. Done and done.

FH is building one kind of like this for our wedding. I was very sticker shocked as well! I'll be the one painting it white. My grandparents 50th anniversary is 2 months after our wedding, so it can be used for that as well.

I'm still on the hunt. I found one for $38 including shipping but all the reviews says its flimsy and the last thing I want is my cake tumbling over because of a cheap cakestand....where can I buy one that is 16" in diameter?

We are having FH uncle who works in a wood shop make all of our wooden wedding decor and saving a TON of money! If we didn't have him though, we would prolly DIY with materials from Hobby Lobby

My baker wanted to rent one to me for $55. Even though in the grand scheme of the wedding this is not much... but out of principle... I couldn't bring myself to pay this much for it. That's probably how much she paid for it in the first place. I should definitely get into the cake stand rental business! Anyway, I found the last one you posted at a secondhand bridal store for $25! The baker said it will be perfect and even offered to buy it from me after the wedding. If you have any of these types of stores in your area then it's worth a look!

You can make one by attaching a pillar to a serving tray or large plate. Just make sure it holds up well so your cake does not fall off. In your case i think a cake stand is necessary because your cake is a one tier and it would be nice to have it higher up than the cupcakes!

Why don't u make it, and spray paint the wood box gold or white, I was shocked at how much they cost for the bling ones, and so I made one for $20 with the mirror top

I would definitely try TJ Maxx homegoods. We did a cupcake display and got all of our cake stands from there for super cheap. I have also seen where people took the wooden wine crates for this. You could always paint those white.

TJ Maxx, Ross, Homegoods, and amazon have much cheaper ones. I even found a pink glass one at michaels I used a coupon on for less than $10
