Cake stands? Necessary? Suggestions?

beautyofdreams, on June 13, 2016 at 10:14 AM Posted in Planning 0 39

Ok ladies, I have been having this internal debate about cake stands for the last year and hopefully you all can point me in the right direction. I would need between a 14"-16" cake stand. I was a bit sticker shocked by the price of them. I tried looking for a rental and couldn't find one. My baker does not rent them either. I have found a few on sale but then the shipping is ridiculous! I am interested in a white (but will take gold) cake stand. Is this a necessary expense? One bride suggested using a serving tray and flipping it over but I'm nervous about the weight of the cake. Here are the ones i'm considering. I would paint the wood stand. Should I suck it up and buy the cake stand for around $75, do the white tray and flip it over $30, or get the wood stand and diy it for $35? Thoughts!

We were totally sticker shocked as well. We decided on using crates instead. I spray painted them white and they should serve our purposes. Only cost us anout $60 in supplies and I should be able to sell them afterwards or at least use them at home. I'll be posting pictures in my BAM.

I bought that same cake stand in your pic for $40! That might solve your problem Smiley smile

@GryffinBride I love that idea of using the crates! How big was your cake? How many tiers? Where did you buy the crates? Sorry for so many questions. lol!

@JillR thanks for the link that definitely helps and brings the price closer to the others! What size was your cake?

My mom found a gorgeous gold plate at TJ Maxx homegoods for my grooms cake. Have you tried those stores?

We only have one tier and then cupcakes. We got everything we needed from Michael's. Our tiered cake is about 18inch in diameter if I recall correctly. (Don't quote me there!)

@Possum yes, I love homegoods but the cakestands are usualy 12" and smaller :-(. @GryffinBride Awesome! I'll have to take a look at micheals to see what they have!

@E-Tex I am starting to notice more and more brides not having them at all which is why i'm going back and forth on getting one. Did you have your cake on the catering plate? (im not sure what its called.)

@Novak thats been the biggest issues. All the cake stands I find in store are never big enough so my only option is to order off line unless I do the tray idea...

I didn't buy a cake stand, never even thought about it. I just looked at a picture of my cake and it looks like it's on some kind of round tray or maybe that's a cake stand. I guess my venue must have one- have you tried asking your venue?

ETA- I went to my venue's facebook page because they always post a picture of the cake. Almost everyone has the same cake stand, so now I'm sure it belongs to our venue.

Look at sales. I got my stunning jadeite cake stand for $4 because it was on clearance at Cracker Barrel. I've also seen them at places like Ross, TJ Maxx, etc. since you have a little bit of time I would just stop in a few different places as you see them and see what they have. You might get lucky!

Check with your venue and with your caterer -- they may have cake stands you can borrow/rent.

ETA: rental companies may also have them.

I skipped it altogether. The cake was only out until after introductions, and then went to the back to be cut. Of all the ridiculous things I spent money on, in then end I'm glad I didn't waste $80 for it to be visible for one hour (the cake itself was enough - LOL!). If I had rented it, it would have been up to someone else to get it back to the bakery, and I did not want to burden someone for something so trivial.

A coworker bride spent a lot of money renting a gorgeous cake stand, and on the day of when she got there, they'd set up her cake NEXT to the stand.

It's one of those expenses that is totally not necessary, and you can buy foil cake boards for incredibly cheap if you want an extra pop of color underneath.

I personally have had the same internal debate and decided not to get a cake stand, because you need a real steady hand to cut the cake if it's on top of one and I don't. Firmly sitting flat on a cake board on the table is safest for me!

@Reggie Thanks! I'll be sure to continue checking those places!

@Nancy T I wish. I checked with my venue and baker. My baker said they will have some eventually to rent but no time frame on when they will have them...

@Sharon & Brad good point. If we did rent we would have to have someone return because we leave for our honeymoon the next morning!

@AMW thanks. I know the baker will have the cake set on one of those foil boards so I literally could just go with that.

Go to a goodwill store. They usually have them. Ross and Marshalls also have them. If you're set on gold go and grab yourself a gold glass marker and make accents to whatever one you get yourself.

@EleanorRigby thanks! I had not thought about goodwill but will definitely go by there!
