Cake Prices?

thefuturemisses710, on October 28, 2009 at 3:22 PM Posted in Planning 0 29

Does anybody know the average cost of a 3 tier, buttercream (no fondant), round layers, with ribbon around the bottom of each layer, cake in the Houston, TX area is? I have no clue what is reasonable and what a possible rip-off is. Any insight on cake prices is more than appreciated Smiley smile Thank you so much!

Here is what I found online hon Smiley smile

    Typical costs:

The average cost of a wedding cake is $543, according to The Bridal Association of America.

For wedding cakes, most bakeries and pastry chefs charge by the slice. A low-end option would be a smaller tiered cake in chocolate or vanilla paired with a sheet cake for cutting for around $1.50 a slice.

A mid-range two- or three-tiered cake in a standard flavor such as chocolate, vanilla, carrot cake or lemon poppy seed with buttercream icing and minimal fondant decorations can run $5 or $6 a slice.

A high-end multi-tiered gourmet cake with flavored fillings, fondant icing and elaborate fondant, gum paste and sugar decorations can run $10 or more per slice.

But I think it greatly varies depending where you live Smiley smile

My cake is costing us $250 for 100 people.

I dont know, but a think to consider would be seperate floating stands like what I did. I was able to have 4 tiers for $100 because of the simple design. I added the 5th because it was so cheap. I know this doesnt answer your question but maybe it will help if the regular style is just above your price range.

I'm in San Antonio, my cake was 4 tier with kind of a lot of detail. I got it from The Cake Shop at about $700 or so, maybe more. I would just shop around and go to more than one place to get prices.

Wow mine is olny costing me 200 for a 3 tier wedding cake with ribbon. It feeds about 95 people. If you supply the ribbon, it can be a whole lot cheaper. And the 200 includes delivery too!

Yea Lindsey , mine isn't real expensive either, like I said, I think it depends where you live and also, the links I posted I think are prices from REAL popular, expensive bakeries, not like your hometown bakery and such, ya know what I mean? lol (hope that made sense)

I think your best bet is to go around and do some cake tastings and pricing. I don't know about in TX but here in CO the average price for just a butter cream simple cake starts around $3.75 - $4.75 a slice, and goes up from there. my advice would be to make sure to do a tasting and not just go with a place based on the price. We went to one that is a well known cake shop here and has been on Food network challanges and the cake didn't takes as good as some of the smaller bakers we have gone to. For me it's all about the taste on the cake, and less about the money. I'm budgeting about $650 for the cake for about 65 people.

When I was calling around for cakes, all of the places I checked into were charging $2/slice - that was a flat rate - it didn't matter how fancy or simple the cake was. In my opinion, that was pricey considering my sister had booked her cake for her wedding (which was June 2009) and she got hers at $1.25/slice.

Hello and congrats! An average cake for that description ranges $500-700 pending if you want fresh fruit or flowers on the cake. Check out Cakes by Anastasia (in Humble they are listed on here as well) the cakes are reasonable and delicious.

Try thinking outside of the box. If your design is simple, see if a family member can help and make it, things are more special when they come from those we love even if they don't look as professional. If you are worried about stacking, try free standing stands, they can be purchased at Michaels. Or use something unique covered in a fabric to match your colors. Ribbon can be purchased just about anywhere. Also check out the Wilton website for do it yourself advice and instructions.

In CT, I have seen per slice pricing anywhere from $1.75 per slice if it is part of a wedding package at a hall to $15 per slice. I would say that most of the wedding cake specialists charge $2.50 to $3.50 for a basic tiered cake with no special piping or fondant. Just between you and me, I think that's reasonable. I've made a few cakes, and the pressure of making it look perfect and transporting it, etc... is worth every penny. Congrats! There are many questions to ask about cakes before you get the prices. You want a 3 tier but how many people do you need to feed? The tiers will determine that. Do you have a particular design in mind? Only if you’re on a tight budget, believe it or not Wal-Mart does well with wedding cakes for a DIY bride. You can have a nice wedding on a tight budget, do not enlist your family/friends unless they are a professional baker and very punctual! The last thing you need is to worry about anything on your wedding day. If you are thinking about using a planner with for ‘Day of services’ or not I suggest you meet with one and share you budget and vision, a professional will guide you in the right directions. Here is a link to view a cake my DIY bride ordered from Wal-Mart ($160), it was fresh and was not bad at all.

I think you should really shop around. We had prices from $1.50-$3 a slice. We found a wonderful baker who didnt charge extra for different flavors and due to our unique situation didnt charge us for fondant either which was wonderful. We only have about 50-60 people coming to the wedding but the cake is the big thing so that everyone can have a couple of slices (great since both our families love desert and also there will be drinking and people like to eat then). We have a four tier cake and a 4inch to take home for ourselves it serves about 160 slices covered in fondant and cost us $500 including delivery and set up.

Debi B. is right on the money with her advice. You must ask the per serving price, you must taste the cake, and you must find out what is included and what is extra. Unless it's your dear auntie who is baking the cake as a gift to you, if you go with a small in home baker be sure your baker is licensed. That usually means they have passed a food saftey course & had their kitchen inspected regularily by the health department. As a cake baker in MA, best of luck with your wedding!

Well I live in MD but we are having a cake for 100... its going to be a three layer cake with 2 different flavors: chocolate cake and chocolate mouse and white chiffon with fresh strawberries. Keep in mind some places will charge extra to do more than one flavor. We're keeping it fairly simple-- white buttercream icing with the ribbon (which I will be bringing) around the bottom. All this, including delivery, decoration, and a freshly made cake for our one year anniversary, will come to $483! We were pretty happy with that.
