CAKE POPS!!

MRS. FRANCO, on July 23, 2011 at 8:54 PM Posted in Planning 0 23

I went to try some cakes today. The baker is charging us $320.00 for 200 cake pops individually wrapped with a ribbon, and a 6 inch squared cake for FH and I, and delivery. Do you think this is a good deal or can I find something cheaper?

Break it down. That's about $1.40/pop (if my quick math is right). That's not a bad price at all, especially adding in delivery. However I will say that $320 isn't worth it to ME...

I agree with Meghan. Reasonable per person. Are these favors? Or is this in place of cake? If it is in place of cake, you will need 3-4 pops per guest.

I'd go with just getting a wedding cake. You can get a whole wedding cake for around that price, maybe little more.

I've seen cake pops for around $2 so if it is $1.40 a piece then its a deal, but I wouldn't replace my cake with them. However, I'm making cake pops for my wedding favors. I am giving 3-4 cake pops per guest. I found a recipe posted by a baker on how to make them and such. Am very excited, going my trial/practice ones for the holidays. Not only is it cheaper for me to make my own, but I can make any flavor combos and such that I want.

Most cake pops are only 2 or 3 bites each so I would think they wouldn't be a good replacement for your wedding cake, unless you were having other desserts as well.

Well if you are doing 2-3 per person (which i think you really need to do) in replacement for cake it's really not as good of a deal. it goes from $1.40 per person to $3-$4 a person. Which i think you could probably find cheaper- but that will depend on where you live. If we get a cake thru our catering company it's closer to $2 a person for their cakes.

I have been calling other places, most want to charge between $1.50-$3.00 per cake pop. So far I think I did get a good deal. And I know its small, but most people either get a super small piece of cake anyways, or not eat the whole thing. So at least with these they can choose to eat it then, or later. @ Kristina: yea, I did some research on DIY ones, definitely cheaper, and definitely and option.

That's the thread I posted when I decided to do DIY for favors. I posted the recipe I found and some flavor combinations I had found for ideas. Starts at bottom of page 1 and goes to beginning of page 2. (in case you'd like to see)

    Good luck!!

$1.40 a piece is a good deal. I doubt you will find them for much cheaper than that. Are you getting them with any designs? If so, then you are definitely getting a deal. From my perspective, the actual cost of making them is relatively inexpensive, however the time involved to make eye stopping cake pops...that is another story and thats why their price can go up to the same as a wedding cake. Are you still planning to have a top piece cake with a topper that you save for your year anniversary? I like your idea, its economical and sensible. Alot of people don't eat the slice of wedding cake. I would recommend having a Top Piece with a cake topper of your choice or theme and then get a cake pop stand that matches well and kinda make a cake pop/cake with your top and stand. If that makes any sense. I wish you the best!

If you are thinking of doing them yourself, I would take a day and make a batch first before you decide. They are fun and simple, but quite time-consuming. So know what you are getting into first.

I just tried them myself over the weekend...

I was just at a wedding this weekend with cake pops instead of cake and it was a huge hit!! They had 3 different flavors and everyone kept going back for more all night! It was great. Prior to this wedding it is not something I would have thought was a good idea, but now I think it's wonderful.

Here's a photo I took of the display!

Are those jars on the left side?? cus if they are..i love that idea, the stand that we have only holds about 100 cake pops, and I am not sure what I want to do with the rest.

Yeah! They were jars to show what flavors the different colors were. They were filled with the clear glass marble thingies (sorry, I'm bad at wedding lingo).
