Cake pops instead of cake

TIFFANY, on December 11, 2016 at 10:54 AM Posted in Style and Décor 0 124

So we decided to do cake pops and only have a cake to cut for our parents to watch. I am trying to figure out a way to have the cake pops look cute on the cake table. Has anyone else done this and do you have a picture of how it was displayed

Logistically, it would probably be best to have a cute display like below and then have a bigger table with them arranged for easy selection not necessarily beauty because that's going to be a ton of cake pops.

I would figure somewhere between 3-5 per person although a quick Google search says 2 per person but that seems a little low.

You can do sticks up in this kind of full table display, very elegant. Or you can do bouquets around the cake table, and incorporate your own flower colours.

That's like one bite per person. Guess it is a know your crowd thing? My friends and family would not be happy with one "bite" of cake. Will you be offering other desserts? I suppose it would also depends on your main meal and if it was plated or buffet. If you do buffet and only budget one per person that means someone isn't going to get any because someone will take more than one, garenteed.

@Ashley I guess it wasnt a big deal because me and FH dont like cake like that. She has done tons of weddings here in stl so i figured i should trust her view because everyone else i know that had them did cupcakes and cookies with it and it still wasnt enough. I can see her view as well when my sister in law got married they cut up the cake for everyone to take and she had half her cake still let at the venue and i didnt even eat my piece i threw it away

A lot of people aren't fond of cake pops, and, unlike cupcakes, they are significantly different than cake. I think you are right at the edge of having a tiered reception with this. You usually see cake pops as a part of a dessert bar, not as a substitute for cake. If your family is sitting there with cake, your guests should be offered cake as well. Sheet cake, cupcakes, whichever. Just my opinion, as someone who thinks cakepops are gross. The displays are cute though, so if you end up doing the pops that would be a great way to make them available.

@og alecia maybe i will increase them since @ashley said the same thing. we have at least 285 people on our list right now. Oh i forgot to say that only the wedding party will have the ones with the sticks everyone else will have them without the sticks.

@alwaysms i love cake pops and dont really like cake. They want us to keep the cake for our anniversary but we prob wont do that either. The cake will be given to who ever wants a piece we are not even doing a tasting of the cake like we did the cake pops because we dont care.

Oh I didn't realize you are offering both cake and pops. That's fine then. Also, they will stay upright if you push the sticks into a block of styrofoam. So you could either paint the foam or put the block in a box with no top that has been decorated.

    I have a few questions:

Is there enough regular cake for everyone to have a slice?

Are the cake pops intended to replace the cake?

Yes, there should be enough cake pops for everyone to have AT LEAST one. Additionally, if there is actual cake there, there should be enough for everyone to have at least one slice.

As a guest, if I saw the couple slice an actual cake, but there was only enough for a select few to have cake, I'd be kind of pissed. I hate cake pops with a passion: they're a trend I wish would die out quickly.

If you're having a cutting cake, there should be enough for guests to all have a piece. Otherwise, like @Always mentioned, you're essentially towering your reception, even if you and your FH don't eat the cake yourselves. That's disrespectful and rude to your guests, and will quite likely end up in some very offended guests.

ETA: To clarify, if I went to a wedding and ALL they had were cake pops, I'd be disappointed, but not angry. If they had a little cake for the bride and groom or for a few guests and cake pops for everyone else, I'd be pissed.

@MNA i cant please everyone and if it is my wedding i should be able to have the things i like. no there wont be enough cake for everyone and most of the people i know could care less about cake they want to party and drink. we are only cutting the cake for our parents to see that we didnt want to do that either. It comes down to cost and i cut cost where things didnt matter im not paying for a tier cake thats over $500 for cake to be wasted.

I would talk to your baker. When she said that she would only order one per person because people will forget about them, it makes me think that she thinks the cake pops are wedding favors.

No one is going to forget dessert at a wedding.

I wouldn't be happy with a bite of cake, and in all my years of catering, I've rarely seen cake go to waste unless more was ordered because the couple liked the look of a bigger cake.

I personally don't like cake pops either....all I can think about is someone squashing cake into a little ball with their hands. Ick.

But don't lapse into, "it's my wedding and I'll do what I want". That never works unless you're eloping.

I don't see anything wrong with cake pops if you have several flavors and every guest gets a few. I'm confused about why only the wedding party would get the ones with sticks though? Is that a cost saving thing? Why even differentiate? Get them all on sticks or none of them on sticks.

Also, whether or not you enjoy cake, dessert is part of the meal and in order to properly host your guests, you need to make sure that every person gets dessert if they want it.

I love cake pops but cake is cheaper! And not everyone will like the substitute, especially if they only get one! I am a petit girl and I would eat at least 2.

That is a ton of guests. I would say the cake for cutting and get sheet cake in the back for everyone.

Honestly, I don't think that serving one cake pop per person for dessert is proper hosting.

Personally, I would do a sheet cake and cake pops. I know you don't like cake, but since you are budget constrained, it's probably your best option.

If you weren't budget constrained, I would recommend a larger amount and variety of cake pops and/or additional bite sized desserts.

If you're dead set on not doing a cake and you haven't sent out your invitations, I would reconsider the guest count, so you can afford to properly host your guest.
