Cake- how much to order?

Sunny, on December 28, 2010 at 5:18 PM Posted in Planning 0 22

I'm expecting 250 guests. Everyone tells me that you don't need to order 250 pieces of cake because there will be a ton left over, but how much exactly DO you order vs the amount of people attending???

Thanks in advance!

I was told to order less cake as well but I didn't. i told the venue not to save the top layer because we get a free cake topper at a year. My guests just happened to love the cake and ate all of it but I hear that this would be the exception, not the norm. Sorry for the ambiguous answer..........I guess I would order less because some won't show up and not everyone will eat cake. Good luck!

Depends on their appetite. Smiley smile Seriously, I don't know if there is a correct way to measure who chooses to eat the cake. I love cake but if I'm full from dinner, I'll pass on it.

Well, personally, I would order a standard 3 tier cake, maybe a little on the larger sides (especially if you want to keep the top for your 1 year). Remember, they will have grooms cake as well to chow on...

Ya true. Plus, I want a 4 tier cake so it'll probably serve close to 200 anyways...

@TeeDub....Thanks for that guide. It's funny though because based on Wilton's guide, I am going to have a heck of a lot of cake leftover.

We are having 60 people. We paid per person. However, we are having a 4 tier hat box carrot cake. The bottom tier is 12 ". The top is an oversized cupcake. That is going to be a lot of cake to eat.

If you are having a grooms cake and/or a sweet table, I would go with ordering for less guests. I think maybe it's all about how big you want it?? I don't know, I am confused.

@Carole B: We had a four-tier cake for 60 people as well. We saved the top tier for our first anniversary. The other three layers were described by several of our guests as the best wedding cake they had ever eaten. They were also three different flavors, which tends to get people to eat more. (Some people want to try one of each.) Nevertheless, we probably had half of the cake left over after the wedding. Part of that may come from the fact we also had a chocolate fountain. But I suspect you will also have quite a bit left over.

Fortunately, we did not pay by the person, since NotFroofy made our cake. And we ate or gave away all the leftovers.

@2d Bride.....I wish I could bake ours. I make a kick butt carrot cake, but I just can't add that to my things to do. Originally, our cake was 3 layers. However, because of the design and the biker wedding topper on the bottom layer, the designer thought that extra fourth layer(actually an individual cake pan), would make it look more symetrical. ??? I only paid $315 for it, or $5.00 per person. I suspect we are going to have a lot of cake left over as well. Smiley smile Carrot is my fave. Since the diet will no longer be needed, I think I can help with the leftovers.

@Staci....I thought so too. I am totally confused. I think our cake is more design centered than anything else.

@Carole B: Oh, I can definitely relate to not wanting to add that stress. We had the advantage that both of us were heavily involved in preparations, so I could decorate the reception venue while NotFroofy baked the cake. We were also having the reception three days after the ceremony, which eased the time crunch. And even with all that, NotFroofy was frustrated that she really didn't have enough time to decorate the cake once she had made it.

We also had our "topper" on the bottom layer. In our case, it was a traditional Welsh love spoon. (NotFroofy is Welsh.)

@2d Bride....I think it is awesome that you could pull it off. We are decorating the venue. However, we have the back up caterer/day of coordinator to help. If I were not such a perfectionist/control freak, I could probably just let everyone else do it and go and get my nails done.

I love that our topper was a bottomer too. Do you have pics?

@Carole B: The first pictures is of our entire cake. The second is of just the topper. There is an explanation of the symbolism of the love spoon at this link.

It all depends on if there are other desserts or not. Also, will the cake be served to each guest by servers or buffet help yourself style? You need less when it is a "Help yourself" style as plates of untouched cake don't get put on every table

We ordered enough cake, for my daughters wedding, for 90 guests, 135 RSVP'd. I questioned the bakery. I was assured that we would be fine. We were. We had enough to send home 8-10 servings each with three family members.

I think it really depends upon the rest of the reception. If you have a full dinner, less cake will be eaten. If you are doing a less formal event, more cake.

Trust your bakery. They are professionals. They will guide you in the right direction. Trust me, if anything, they will want to sell you more cake, than less. ;-)
