Cake Cutting Fee

I just got back a statement from my venue that shows a cake cutting fee of $3 per person (at $75, that is $225) We are not using one of their preferred vendors since my Aunt just opened a bakery and is trying to add wedding cakes to her resume, so we are using her. I just got back a statement from my venue that shows a cake cutting fee of $3 per person (at $75, that is $225) We are not using one of their preferred vendors since my Aunt just opened a bakery and is trying to add wedding cakes to her resume, so we are using her. The cake was included with the package and we aren't getting a discount by not ordering from their vendor, but we are getting cookies and pastries from their preferred bakery, but that is still costing way less than a cake would.

Is this normal for a cake cutting fee? I feel like it is really expensive.

I don't know if I would call it normal, but I have seen cake cutting fees. Like others have said it's just a way for the venue to make money, as if they're already not making enough off of you. Try and negotiate it if you can. I think $3pp is a little high. It's almost the price of a cake!

Having a reception dinner at a restaurant in Las Vegas and they charge a $6/person cake cutting fee. Not sure how to go about negotiating that down...

Yea that's normal. My venue was $4 but they waived it. My sisters was even worse - it was a brunch reception and she had cupcakes and they charged her $3 pp - the restaurant literally never touched the cupcakes as guests put them in boxes provided by my sister as a favor instead of eating them that early in the day. Weddings are just expensive and they will charge extra wherever they can. Sad reality. It is bogus that you get nothing off for not using their cake though.

I've mostly seen it at $1. $3 sounds high/ ridiculous to me. I mean, how hard is it to cut a cake?

I would cut the cake myself, in my dress and all, before paying that much to cut a cake.

My venue charged a cake cutting fee if they served regardless of who made the cake because it was an extra server that had to be there later than the dinner service. But they provided china and silverware for no charge if we did it ourselves. My aunt stepped in and cut the cake after our ceremonial cake cutting slice.

I saw fees from $1-$2 per piece from some venues we toured with our daughter. She ended up going with an all inclusive venue that includes the cake and no fee for cutting. Check your contract and give them a call to discuss.

A lot of the venues we looked at had cake cutting fees, and $3 seemed to be the standard amount for my area (Chicago). The venue we chose fortunately doesn't have a fee for cake cutting.

Our venue charges the fee regardless of what you bring in. Since it's a restaurant as well, the only thing you are allowed to bring in is dessert and you pay $2 per person no matter what it is. Agree with @OHP, it's cutting, serving, cleaning up, using their trays (in our case for other desserts), and so much more. Some fees are ridiculous, IMO this is not one of them.

Mine is $2.50 per slice, so comparable.

My venue doesn't charge a cake cutting fee but the vendor I am using for my cake offers it as an extra. It is $100 for the first hour of cutting, then $25 for 30 minutes afterwards. To me, mine seems a little much as well but they will be coming back to the venue after the cake has already been delivered. I definitely think $225 is way too much especially if they are already on site and it wouldn't take them long to cut it.

The cake was the first decision I made, because I love cake. I like the idea of smaller cakes, and she does make amazing cupcakes, but my FFIL made an amazing cake stand also and I really love the cake she is making.

I just don't understand why there is only a cake cutting fee for an outside cake, when the cake is included with the package we got and we aren't using it. So technically we are being hit double for a cake.

It is a brunch wedding though, and a buffet. So that could have something to do with it I guess.

It also caught me off guard because everything else at this venue has been so reasonable and upfront. I don't know if it is just something that was overlooked because most people use their preferred vendor. The total charge for 75 people for a ceremony and brunch wedding is under $8000. That includes a horse carriage to bring guests from the main entrance, to the ceremony, then to the reception.

Most of the venues we looked at had a cake cutting fee of $2.50-$5.00 per person. Luckily the venue we went with doesn't charge a cake cutting fee once you spend x amount of money and we went way over that

As a wedding venue that is also a restaurant, we have a cake cutting fee. As some mentioned, we use it in the restaurant when people bring in outside cakes. This is $3 per person because obviously, we'd rather you spend money on our desserts. But we do offer a free brownie sundae to the birthday person.

However.... since there is typically always a cake at a wedding, it's a service we include in our wedding packages. While the amount they are charging isn't out of line, I think it is not ok to charge in this situation, especially given that you are still purchasing other desserts from them.

If nothing is in the contract about it. You should see if they will consider waiving the fee since you are still getting brownies and cookies from their preferred vendor.

Thank you Mariah S. That makes a lot of sense, I'll see if I can get them to waive that fee using that reasoning.

This is ridiculous. Get a friend to slice cake. This is just another way to bilk the customer.
