Cake Cutting Fee

Amanda, on August 2, 2017 at 7:44 PM Posted in Planning 0 60

I just got back a statement from my venue that shows a cake cutting fee of $3 per person (at $75, that is $225) We are not using one of their preferred vendors since my Aunt just opened a bakery and is trying to add wedding cakes to her resume, so we are using her. The cake was included with the package and we aren't getting a discount by not ordering from their vendor, but we are getting cookies and pastries from their preferred bakery, but that is still costing way less than a cake would.

Is this normal for a cake cutting fee? I feel like it is really expensive.

My venue doesn't have a cake cutting fee, but I don't know if that's normal or not.

Some venues have a cutting fee. It's not completely unheard of.

Some places do charge a cake cutting fee. I specifically asked about that at all the venue's we Visited. It's pretty common, especially if some place doesn't provide the cake themselves.

Check your contract. That should definitely state it somewhere if you weren't informed about it.

I do know venues that charge a cutting fee. I think $3 a slice to cut a cake is a little nutty, but it's not my profession so what do I know.

I have hear of $1 pp but never $3. That seams like a lot for doing very little.

Totally normal, especially when you're not using the venue's pastry chef. It's a way for them to recoup the lost revenue. A lot of restaurants also do this if you have a private party and bring in an outside dessert. $3 is well within the range I have seen for this, but look at your contract.

It should be noted that some venues also charge a fee for cutting, plating, and serving the cake for you even if it IS their cake.

Mine is $2 per person, but I toured venues whose fees were up $5 per person.

Woah! My caterer isn't charging anything for cake cutting. I'd really hope the savings from an outside baker is worth it.

All the venues that I visited would charge a cake cutting fee if they were the ones providing the cake, if they weren't there was no charge.

Yeah it's normal, mine says (Cake cutting service - $2 ($4 with ice cream) put I'm doing cupcakes so I won't have to pay that.

I've totally heard of it, but my venue doesn't have it. Honestly it would piss me off paying $500 for a cake to then pay $300 to have someone cut it.

Most places charge that from what I've seen. That doesn't seem too bad though.

I think it's bullshit. And I'd call them on it.

The staff is there. It literally takes 15 minutes to cut and plate cake for 100-150 people.

You know what I'd do? If they don't budge? I'd have your aunt make a cake for each table, use it as a centerpiece and designate a person at each table to cut it

I honestly hate shit like this.

We're comparing lots of different venues and caterers. The cake cutting fee is pretty common, I'd say maybe half the vendors we're looking at have one. $3 is pretty standard from what I've seen. I still think it's beyond ridiculous.

Have you ever tried to cut one of those wedding cakes?

It's extremely time consuming so yes there are cake cutting fees at most places
