Cake, cupcakes, pastries??

April, on August 13, 2019 at 6:32 AM Posted in Wedding Reception 1 37
We are moving right along with our planning and have booked almost all of our vendors, but after getting some pricing from local bakers for cakes, we are torn on what to do. FH was originally dead set on having a cake but after seeing all of the inflated prices for cakes, we are having second thoughts and are now considering all options for dessert. For the other couples trying to save $, what did you end up choosing? We have yet to price out pastries but it’s always nice to hear first hand experience from other couples, our venue also requires the dessert to come from a licensed/insured establishment.

Any time it'a a wedding even the prices for pastries are inflated as well. Walmart, Sams and especially Publix wedding cakes are really good and priced low, You can get a three tier cake from walmart for about $150 and Publix about $400

That’s good to know, I wouldn’t have thought of those places. I will definitely have to check them out, thank you!

We are having donuts from a farm stand type place. They are medium sized and are $8 per dozen. Definitely saving us tons of money. And we also got little to go bags so people can take them home so they are doubling as our favors.

We are having cupcakes only and they range from $1.50 to $3.00 a cupcake depending on the flavour, filling etc. The recommended amount of cupcakes is 1.5 per guest if that helps you. I had a budget in mind but when we went to the tasting they were all amazing! FH decided he wanted more flavours and upped the budget. 😁

The price of the cake oftentimes depends on the flavor, design, and how many people you need to feed. So if you do a very simple cake without the fondant and intricate designs and just purchase a nice cake topper from websites like Etsy you can probably get a better price.

    Other options are:

Do a small cake for show and then have the bakery make a sheet cake that will actually feed the amount of people you need. Leave the sheet cake in the back and then cut the sheet cake not necessarily the cake that's for show.

Pies...people love pies and you can legitimately purchase them at the store for cheap and people will be very happy

As someone already mentioned...donuts! Buy a really nice cake stand and stack the donuts on top of each other to create a tower of donuts. You can do the same with oreos too.

Anything that's smaller and more time consuming to decorate like cupcakes can be pricey. It all depends on the bakery. So I wouldn't assume that cupcakes will save you money unless you buy them in bulk from a grocery store.

This is our wedding cake. It comes with a 6 in and 8 inch round chocolate cake, 36 chocolate cupcakes. But we wanted more so we ordered 15 more. We’re renting the cake stand for $100. We get $75 back when we return it. The total was $300. We got our cake from Publix.

We are doing a small single tier cake (for cake cutting) and the rest cupcakes and mini cupcakes! It is more of a preference for us, we want to give our guests a lot of different flavor options Smiley smile

We're getting apple cider donuts from a local orchard/u-pick. I think they'll be lovely for our fall wedding and FH and I went apple picking on our first trip together. Smiley smile Plus, um, they're super yummy. Our venue has one of those donut peg wall displays, so it was an easy decision.

We'll also have a small cutting cake.

We are getting a one tier cake in the flavor we knew we wanted. We are also getting cupcakes in that flavor as well as three other flavors we loved from the bakery. Our cost for 4 dozen cupcakes and the cake is less than $200. We also plan to get brownies, lemon bars, and some other kind of cookie bar from Costco to put out for those that might not like cake. Wedding cake prices are ridiculous and I just want to make sure our guests are well fed without breaking the budget.

We are having a small cake for cutting and then sheet cake for everyone to eat! We did a small local bakery and total for about 140 people was around $300. Which I understand is a lot for cake, but it was less than what we were quoted at other places! Personally, I prefer brownies!!

We're also doing a 1-2 tier small cake for the cutting and for the wedding party to enjoy, then a few different flavor of cupcakes for the guests and all putting it on a display so it looks like a big cake from far away! It's only going to cost us less than $500 which is great for us!

I originally wasn't going to do a cake either anymore after going to a dozen bakeries and seeing how much it cost for a darn wedding cake. So I was going to just buy a ton of cookies aha but eventually we found a cheap bakery.

It was cheaper for us to do a dessert table with a small cutting cake vs. traditional cake. Our table had cupcakes, cookies, and brownies.

I’m planning to make cupcakes with my mom before the wedding. Some people have warned me that that can be very stressful, but baking is calming for me, and with help it shouldn’t be an issue. I can’t bring myself to spend hundreds of dollars on a cake that usually ends up tasting terrible.

We ended up doing a smaller cake that only serves about 50 people (2 tiers with 2 different flavors), in addition to a dessert bar. We will have cookie sandwiches, banana pudding shooters, Oreo shooters, and mini cheesecakes. The cake was only $135 and the desserts vary in price. But all are being made by the bakery we chose for our cake. We will spend less than $300 total.

Our cake was $250 but it only feeds 30. It’s decorated over the top, hence the price. If we would’ve went with a simple cake it would’ve been only $80. Cake prices depend on your cake flavor(standard vs premium), your frosting and your decor. Cake alone is pretty cheap for a standard shape! You can always buy a plain frosted tiered cake and order cake flowers from your florist or use silk or gumpaste flowers(one single HUGE gumpaste peony is like $30 for a modern look)

Thank you everyone! I will definitely be doing a lot more research, every Baker I got a quote from so far ranged from $4-7 per person as a starting rate, we are pretty basic so I’m ok with a simple cake but definitely not willing to spend that much, our wedding will be about 100-110 people; cupcakes are sounding pretty good so I will definitely be getting more quotes for those as well!

We are thinking of doing donuts from Duck Donuts instead of a cake. Neither of us is a huge fan of cake and it's soooo expensive. It ends up being about a quarter of the price for us to do something different (and that we actually like).

Cupcakes are a good option. Cookies are also a nice dessert. I like the idea of having a small round cake to cut, then using sheet cake to feed your guests.
