Hey guys!

My fiance and I are on the fence about what to do with our cake. We don't want it to be overly expensive, and were wondering if anyone has an input on the pros, cons, and potentially pricing of doing just cake, cupcakes, or even just a dessert bar.

Also, we are in Saginaw, MI so if you have any recommendations on a baker, that would be appreciated as well.

Thank you in advanced!

I always look forward to cake at weddings, so I would vote for cake or cupcakes.

I know sometimes people do several smaller cakes, and I think that would look nice with a small desert bar!

I personally think wedding cakes and cupcakes can look beautiful. But I wouldn't turn down an awesome desert bar either!

My vote would go to cake. Cupcakes remind me of a little kid's birthday party.

Although there are a lot of things you can do with cupcakes it does seem more like a birthday party thing and not a wedding. I would recommend cake or even a cake bar, depending on where you get your cake you can ask the baker to do a bunch of smaller cakes in different flavors so there is bunch of variety. that is what we are doing.

I'm all about wedding cakes, you can have a cupcake any day of the week, wedding cakes are (hopefully) a once in a lifetime thing.

I personally would do a cake and a dessert buffet.

Does your venue charge for per slice of cake to serve? You might want to check into that. Mine charges $2 per cake slice, no exceptions. What would cost me less is to do a small cake and cupcakes. I just don't like having to consider 2 cupcakes per person to have enough, bakeries charge $3 a cupcake here. I worry about kids taking more cupcakes than they should. I'm still torn on what I will do just yet lol I also think those cake pops can be a cute idea.

You could always try The Cupcake Station or Just Baked if you are going to go with cupcakes. They are delicious. I think they do cakes too. But I know the cupcakes are good and they have a large fun selection.

Many venues charge a cake cutting price per head that can cost up to $2 per person, which can make cupcakes a better option if you're on a budget.

Another option is to do the cutter cake with the dessert bar or candy bar. That was a big hit at a wedding I was MOH in last year. They just bought the cutter cake the day before at their favorite bakery off the shelf!

I'm doing a small cake for just us, cupcakes for the guests, and then a cookie bar as well. That will double as a favor and dessert to be enjoyed throughout the night. Smiley smile

@Samantha, Thank you for starting this post. I was just thinking to myself about what we should do for our wedding. We are trying to keep it nice looking but least expensive. We had decided that if we go with cupcakes we want to do a small two tiered cake as well. I've been looking into cool DIY stands to make the cup cakes appear a bit nicer than just sitting them on the table. Right now I am leaning towards cupcakes but will depend on pricing once I find a bakery. Good luck. FYI you aren't too far from me, I am in Livonia MI.

    Thanks, Kerri!

We met with a few different bakers, and we determined that cake would be best instead of cupcakes. Mostly because we have a lot of kids coming and typically kids will grab more than one cupcake. Apparently, if its served cake, they are less apt to do that, so there isn't as much of a need to have extra just to make sure everyone gets some.

That said, we opted for a smaller 3 tiered cake (3 different flavors), and will have 3 full sheet cakes in the same flavors. Sheet cakes feed more, and are so much cheaper than a big, ornate wedding cake. The sheet cakes will be in the kitchen and plated up already and that way no one will know it wasn't part of the grand wedding cake.

Just an idea! Our baker, in case you were wondering, is Amy from Amazing Cakes. She has a profile on WW, so definitely check her out!

    Good luck!
