Cake, Cake, and More Cake

Melissa, on December 10, 2019 at 8:55 AM Posted in Planning 0 30
I am really struggling with this whole cake(s) purchase thing.....lol. They are soooo expensive! Is it a must that you have both a wedding and a groom cake? Has anyone considering using the bakery at a grocery store such as WalMart, Kroger, Sams, etc. So far I’ve been quoted close to 1K for 2 cakes.

A groom's cake is definitely not a necessity. A lower cost alternative could be a small cutting cake for you and your FH and cupcakes for your guests. You can also have a wider variety of flavors this way.

You definitely don't have to have a wedding and groom cake. We're getting our cake from a locally owned family bakery and it'll be about $400 for a three tier cake to serve about 75 people. Other places quoted us almost double that. We also considered Publix if the last bakery we tried wasn't a winner, but thankfully it was!

Sometimes couples will get a one tiered cake just for the "cake cutting" and then have sheet cakes in the back for the guests, that's definitely a way to cut costs. Another option would also be a one tiered cake for cutting and cupcakes which could be a lot cheaper depending on where you're getting them from. Best of luck Smiley smile

I've never been to a wedding where they had a groom cake so it definitely isn't necessary. I have seen other posts on here about people getting their cakes from a grocery store like Sam's Club or Costco. Not sure what your budget is, but I would definitely nix the groom cake.

Keep searching but also it will depend on how intricate your cake is. For example are you asking for complicated flavors or fillings. Are asking for fondant or a lot of design. Do you have a picture of the cake you want? I used to do this as a side business and people thing that designs do not cost extra but they do. Also, caution on the super markets because the publix near me does wedding cakes and wants to charge wedding cake money when I know those are not cakes made in house. I would much rather pay a cake company the same price for a in house made cake. You should also check with in home bakers. They may charge a bit less as they do not have to pay for a shop and overhead. Worse case go with the first poster where you have a small cake for you guys to cut and then go to wal-mart and get some chocolate and vanilla butter cream cupcakes.

My FH and I are not doing the groom's cake (he's not big on cake). It's definitely not required. I've seen some where they'll have a tiny cake for the cake cutting and the rest is cupcakes.

I've also been to a wedding where instead of a groom's cake, they had a trifle bowl that he made. It's definitely cheaper!

We're doing a three tier cake for 400 dollars. We also elected for buttercream though - an elaborate design wasn't as important to us as just having the cake there for us to eat - so you might want to look at that too. My FH also didn't want a groom's cake, which saved us money. We're cutting costs where we can, and a small local baker was a lot cheaper than the more main stream bakeries we looked at. That being said, I don't think anyone will object if you get Krogers or another grocery store to do it - save your money where you can!

The groom cake is definitely not a requirement. Definitely think its something you can skip to save money. We haven't set up a meeting yet, but we fully intend to get our wedding cake from Publix. When we talked to them at a bridal show, we didn't go into detail but from what they told us, it was much cheaper than all of the other bakery's there, and in my opinion it tasted better. Definitely explore options in the supermarket route.

Where do you live? I ask because I called to get a wedding cake quote and Publix was not cheaper. I am in Tampa Bay. If we continue with the plan of a post elopement ceremony I would go to Alessi Bakery. They are much cheaper and highly review. For 1 10" cake Publix quoted me $110. Benefit of the doubt the person misquoted but Alessi would give me a 2 tier 6'' and 8'' which would be more servings for that same price.

In Florida it's really common to get a wedding cake from Publix, so I don't see why it would be a problem to use Kroger or another grocery store. You also don't need a giant wedding cake. You can do a small 1 or 2 tier "cutting cake" with the decorations you want, then a sheet cake that your caterer will cut and serve so no-one will ever see it. Another option is a cutting cake with cupcakes for guests, or a small cake and a variety of other desserts like cookies, donuts, etc. A groom's cake definitely isn't necessary either, we won't be doing one.

I don't think it's a must to have both. My FH and I are not big fans of cake, so we're only having one. We are having a cake b/c we got very lucky and one of my co-workers wives (who makes cakes for a living), offered to do ours for us for free. We aren't having a large cake either. We're having 125 guests at our wedding but are getting a cake that serves 90 b/c we are also having a dessert bar. Honestly, if cakes aren't your thing, I've been to weddings where the bride and groom have done a really cool thing with doughnuts in place of their cake b/c neither of them were fans of it.

My FH and I are thinking of doing a small cake for cutting/people who don't like cheesecake, then mini cheesecakes for the rest of the dessert. I haven't started on any pricing yet, but the cheesecakes would come to about $250 for 10 dozen, which I don't even think we need that much. I'm hoping a small cake would be less than $200.

I think purchasing from a store is a good idea. I considered it. The only reason why I didn't do it was because they can't deliver so I didn't want to even try to have anyone pick it up.

I live in NC. Like I said, we didn't discuss major details and I'd have to dig out the sheet they gave me for a number, but the cake that I was wanting would be under $200, compared to the basic cakes that started around $200 at other places that I've looked. I think you bring up a good point with all of this though. It all depends on what you're looking for. We're looking for something relatively basic, decorated but nothing terribly detailed and not a lot of extras, and we only have 50 people. I still think looking at grocery stores can be an economical choice, but it can vary a lot depending on what you are really looking for so it may not be the best option for you.

Ahhhh ok. I mean don't misunderstand me Publix cake is bomb and I could eat an entire one myself ha ha. Just the quote I was given was high compared to a few other places I shopped around. Yeah even with the baker I want it would be something fairly simple and I will get as much design within the simplistic parameters because I love certain accents but all those flowers, fondant designs, etc... add up. I kind of want to get a grooms cake that is NE Patriots themed but I need to find something simple.

You definitely can skip a groom's cake! I'm doing a small cake to cut and cupcakes from the grocery store bakery for guests (because they are super delicious and cheaper than a boutique bakery)!

Groom's cakes are completely optional! I've heard about Walmart wedding cakes being really good! At the end of the day, cake is cake, regardless where you bought it

Maybe you can get a small cutting cake and order serving cake to cut cost. The place we are getting our cake from charges $3 per person on a buttercream cake. Otherwise its $6/person on tiered cakes.

You don't have to have a cake at all if you don't want to. We had donut towers and they were a hit!

I have never heard of a groom cake, but we actually are kind of opting out of a cake. They are crazy expensive for us, and we don't want anything crazy on our cake. We decided to go with four different cupcake flavors and a 2 tiered cake for just us. It might be nice to have a variety of flavors for your guests to choose from!

You don't have to do a groom's cake if you don't want to! We're doing one because FH really wanted one, and I love them to. Another option would be to have a smaller wedding cake and groom's cake. Our groom's cake was only $2.50 per serving, but our wedding cake was $4 per serving so the groom's cake was significantly less per person. We're expecting 200 guests so we got a wedding cake that feeds 152 and groom's cake that feeds 52. The wedding cake was $608, and the groom's cake was $180 (there was an upcharge for fondant on one of the tiers).
