Our wedding begins at 7pm and we are thinking of cutting the food at the reception and making it to a "cake and punch reception". we actually have a candy buffet as well...would this be okay?

Personally....I think there should at least be finger food. Too much sugar!

We were just doing cake and punch, but then I thought about the fact that if someone can't/don't eat cake, there is nothing else there for them so we added fruit/veg platters and a cheese/crackers platter. That is really all I can afford, but I think it will be enough. I think the presentation of 3 choices will make a big difference in the feel of the reception.

Would it be in your budget to put out some cheese and crackers (maybe some other stuff like olives, dips, chips, breads as well) out? It will just give some sweet or savoury options to your guests. If you have already told everyone not to expect a meal that's fine. We are having our engagement party at 7pm, and have just stated we are providing canapes and drinks. It's that little later to give guests the option to have a smallish dinner or late lunch before coming if they think they will be hungry.
