Buying a dress without trying not on

Shaylyn, on July 10, 2019 at 6:24 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 7
Hi ladies! Two of the wedding dresses I’m considering just popped up for sale on a pre-owned site. I have appointments to try them on in store in October (the soonest my MOH could make the trip to NY with me), but I’m tempted to buy them both right now since the prices are so good and then just sell whichever one I don’t like as much. Am I just being impulsive? What would you recommend?

That’s definitely risky. Unless you think you can get your money back if you have to sell them I would wait. Every dress fits a bit different and if you haven’t tried it on you might not like the style on your body type. Touch call for sure.

I get the temptation of wanting to buy them now since they're on sale but if you haven't tried them or any wedding dress I wouldn't risk it. Sometimes what you think you want isn't exactly what you want at all when you try it on (maybe it doesn't flatter your body how you would like or you fall in love with a completely different style dress).

In my case, I'm normally a size 2-4 and I would ASSUME to just buy the bigger size dress 4 and be done with it but after trying on dresses and actually being measure my own measurements are SO off we had to order a size 10 to accommodate my bust and hips and take the waist in. I would never in my wildest dreams think to order a 10 or even a 12, but we did. Unless you know your exact measurements and go off the size chart recommended there and maybe a size up I wouldn't risk it.

I would wait! A lot of the dresses I tried on were similar to each other on the hanger, but none of them looked the same on me. The dress I picked looked way better than the others that looked similar to it! Plus bridal sizes are way different than other sizes and you want to be sure to get it in the proper size. My measurements for the dress I got ranged over 3 sizes from each other between my bust, waist, and hips.

I bought formal dresses on a meet in person option like marketplace and I just brought someone with me and tried it on at their house or in a public bathroom. Maybe they would let you do one of those options.

Too risky! You should always try your wedding dress on because of size, fit and how it may look. You want to try on different dresses to see how they look on you and if you need alterations, you can have them (store) do your alterations to fit your needs.

I actually did something similar yesterday! I have been watching a certain Maggie Sottero dress on a pre-owned dress website for a while. I tried multiple stores in town to go try it on before I bought it, but all of them told me they had just sold their sample! I'm going out to CA in about 2 weeks and I should be able to try that dress on, as well as a couple others I've had my eye on. I was planning on waiting to buy the dress online until after I got to try it in CA, but the seller just did a price reduction and I was sure it wouldn't last for another 2 weeks! Luckily, the seller offered a return policy, so I will at least get to try it on before deciding whether to keep it. The real trick will be if I keep it and fall in love with another dress in CA, then I'll have to sell the used one I just bought.

So, if you haven't already taken the plunge, check to see if they offer a return, that will make things MUCH less risky! Best of luck to both of us! We're either financial geniuses or total dunces... 😜 Time will tell!
