Buy wedding dress from Canada- duty charge?

aec2003, on February 18, 2015 at 3:00 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 8

I'm looking into buying a used wedding dress from someone but she lives in Canada. We have researched shipping quotes & it looks like about $60 to ship the dress here. However, it's showing that I might get charged $100 in duty charges. I didn't think US ever had duty charges from something shipped internationally. I've bought many things on Ebay that were shipped internationally & never incurred duty charges. Does anyone know about this?

Yes....thats why duty free stores are so popular in the airports. Some sellers will roll estimated duty costs into the product pricing. Duty charges are legit

She said she could ship without insurance & put the price lower, but the dress wouldn't be insured. Would you do that? I'm not sure how great Canada Post insurance is.

Is this from a shop in Canada or a person in Canada? Also, can I ask the $$$ for the dress?

Depending on how much you paid for the dress you are likely to incur duty charges. I'm in Canada and have to pay duty all the time from stuff I buy from the states. Mostly higher end items and anything being shipped Fedex/DHL

It's from a person in Canada & is $750, plus $60 shipping (If we insure it) plus $100 duty/customs.

The original is $1100 so I'm not sure a $200 discount is worth it in case something is wrong.

Something to keep in mind also is you might get charged brokerage fee's when it crosses the border as well.
