Buy suits rather than rent tuxes?

Julie, on October 20, 2013 at 5:40 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 24

We would like our GM's to buy suits rather than rent tuxes if we can find good quality suits (ie, something they would want to own and wear), not junk. Anyone else done this? From what store and what designer/ style? Hoping to get something for around $150 on sale or coupon or something. Thanks!!

Our GM bought their outfits for the wedding because they can wear it again and no place rents what they are wearing so they got them online. But they are wearing vintage vests.

Fi bought a designer suit from Nordstrom since it should last him for many years to come (plus he does have to wear suits from time to time). $150 might be a bit tough, but not impossible. I'd keep an eye out for Macy's sales because they often have suits for around that price, though I wouldn't recommend their Alfani brand because it's pretty poor quality.

When I initially read this thread, I thought, "Boy, that would be crappy, making the guys buy their own suits if it's required."

But then I sat back and thought, "Jenn that is a double standard, you're making your girls buy their own dresses!"

So I told myself to shut the hell up. Smiley smile

That said, FH found a nice suit from Macy's this past Spring, for about $120, but I have no idea what designer it is and it's at our new apartment right now (and we're still living in our old place until Saturday). It can be done.

Also, I found this site: http://www.tuxedosonline.com/ They sell suits and tuxes for what seems to be pretty great prices, but I don't know the quality. They have a sale and closeout tab.

Yes, a $150 suit is likely not a great suit, most of the suits I own are in the 3-4 range, though you can find good ones for less. Keep in mind, unless you buy separates, which won't fit as well, they will also have to get them tailored.

Plus, shirt, shoes, tie, etc, which are generally included with the rental.

That's what we did! Went to Jos.A. Bank during the B1G3Free sale. Paid $860 for 4 suits with jackets, pressed crease, taxes and alterations.

I was gonna say Jos. A Bank as well. Decent quality but the men who tailored FH pants did a crap job. Try to catch the suit there as they go out of season and they are dirt cheap

$200 would be ok too, since tuxes are close to that, and seem like such a waste of money. We would have the wear any black shoes and white shirt, and we'd buy ties for them. I'll try jos a banks, but the 3for1 desl doesnt include the Travelers style - what stule did you get Kristie? Thanks!!

Check with the groomsmen about their budget and go from there! Some places you can get a deal buying multiple suits, like buy 3 get 1 free but I don't know about the quality.

If high quality is important you might have to look at renting to stay in their budget

We decided to do suits. Our GM are getting their suits from Mens Warehouse. They tend to have good sales right now they have buy one get one free on suits and they don't have to be the same size. The only downside is that the bill cant be split. Its not that big of a deal our GM are working that out. Also, if the GM live in different cities all they have to do is get measured/pick out the suit they want snd call it in to a mens warehouse. Lastly tailoring is included at mens warehouse. They also have some suits in stock that can be about $200 but I believe that comes with tailoring too

I also have seen buy 1 get 2 sales on suits at joesph a banks. The prices are more expensive but that sale comes out to like $200 on average. Im not as familiar with their process though for different size suits.

I think suits are much better than rented tuxes. For one they simply fit better. Ive seen some pretty frumpy tuxes. Also a guy should have a good fitting suit whether they wear it again for a job interview, another wedding, or a nice dinner they should have one. LOL its like a girl not having a nice dress Smiley winking

our GM were all okay $200 because they said at least they get to keep the suit instead of $150 for renting.

    Jos. A Bank!!

Sign up for email alerts for sales. I signed up for alerts because my fiance needed a new suit for the wedding we went to last weekend. The weekend we got engaged, sure enough, I get an email about a GREAT sale, and we were a 5 minute walk from the store. We ended up buying TWO suits + alterations for under $500.

We actually bought my DH Tux instead of renting so he could get it altered. You can find tuxedos for purchase for the same price as renting. Crazy.

DH bought a navy blue suit, that he could wear again, instead of renting a tux.
