Buy dress from bridal shop or get it made by a local designer?

Denise, on August 5, 2019 at 6:00 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 15
Hello guys,

Just wanted to get some advice on where to purchase my wedding gown. I recently met with a local designer and went over my design wish list. After trying on some of her dresses, I finally narrowed it down and had a clear idea of what my dream wedding dress would look like. Her shop does customized dresses and told me she had no problems making my dress. I went home pretty content, excited and would sleep on this decision before I made any deposit. That night, I was curious if a similar dress to what I had envisioned already existed... so I turned to Google and entered a few keywords and lo and behold, I found a very similar dress to what I had in mind! I quickly looked up if this particular dress was available in my area and yes it was! At 1am, I scheduled an appointment to this bridal salon and that same afternoon, I tried on the gown! The design of the gown I had in mind was so close to this gown and I freaking loved it!!!! I felt good about it and knew it was the one! My problem is now where to purchase it??? Both have pros and cons. So for me it’s so tough to make a decision. Anyone had any experience on this?

Designer Shop-I met her at a Bridal Expo and wanted to support local businesses, here are my pro and cons:
+ made to fit (no alteration needed)
+ 100% customized, one of a kind dress
+ production is between 6-5 months and is local
- a little pricey but still within budget ($1550)
- I’m still unsure of the lace she has on hand
- new shop in town (from her dress collection, I could tell her dresses were well made; but not enough review from previous clientele so unknown final product look)

Bridal Shop gown
+ I know exactly what I’m getting
+ slightly cheaper ($1350)
+ Bridal shop is well known in town and has lots of good reviews
- might need alterations (will end up costing the same as the customized gown)
- Production unknown; owner of bridal shop mentioned Hong Kong and their holiday; she estimated 7-8months (this issue was mentioned a lot in their lowest reviews; lots of delay in the delivery of the dress)
- Design is pretty close to what I have in mind and was happy with it, however, I’m still unsure of very minor details

i hope I gave enough info... let me know what you guys would do. And any tips if you guys have any experience on this. TIA!

I would go with the local designer. You would have a unique custom dress, which is a plus! Alterations are basically included in the price, so it seems like a deal to me. Definitely check what kind of lace she has before you put down a deposit Smiley smile

Chances are, the bridal shop dress will cost more in alterations than just $200, especially if lace is involved (to hem a lace dress, the seamstress needs to take off the lace appliques, hem the dress, and then re-sew the lace back on. This can get expensive). I agree with Cher Horowitz, check on the lace pattern that the local designer has on hand. That seems like a better option.

To me buying from the designer shop sounds like a better choice. I agree with previous posts that with alterations you will probably pay more in the long run with the second choice. I think having a custom dress would be awesome and worth it for your special day!

Get the custom-made dress. if you somehow put on weight, or lose too much, you've already payed for the alterations, and it'll be a quick fix.

Custom made. The price is about the same and it will be unique. It's tailored to you.

I had my dress custom made and I loved the process. I was able to buy my own fabric so I knew exactly the quality of silk and lace that went into my dress. Perhaps you could have some input into the type of lace you want if that is important to you? The dressmaker also custom made my veil using the same lace from the dress.

Alterations are usually several hundred dollars. It sounds like having your dress custom made will be more cost effective for you and give you more control over having your dress exactly the way you want it.

Hello everyone! Thanks for the kind replies! I went ahead and with the local designer... BUT, I’m having major dress regret! I don’t know if because the dress wasn’t fitted right yet or I don’t have the proper undergarment, but I didn’t feel confident or happy on my first fitting! To make matters worse, I lost weight, so the extra alteration would cost me. It’s like salt to a bleeding wound! I’m going to attach some pictures and see what you guys think!

The first pic is the dress inspo and the second pic was the actual dress. I was so disappointed by the neckline! We compromised on adding the lace on the strap but I think the neckline still needs work. She said she’s unable to do that coz it might ruin the dress. I don’t feel confident wearing this dress in its current state. I’m seriously considering buying the original dress I fell in love with during my search. Any ideas?

Oh I forgot to mention that I wanted a spaghetti strap so that’s not an error from her part... but the neckline and the construction of the dress were my biggest problems! It just felt flimsy and didn’t hold the shape/silhouette well. Do you guys think adding some type of boning would help the dress have more support and defined shape???

Looks like the model/1st pic is bustier than you. Try a padded bra to fill it out. That might take away some of the focus from the hip area.
