Butterfly release for outdoor ceremony

Maria, on January 21, 2017 at 11:59 AM Posted in Planning 0 22

Butterfly release or no butterfly release? After hearing your horror stories and being reminded it's animal cruelty, I've happily changed my mind on this option. Just glad I asked before versus experiencing something similar to your stories.

It's not very good for the butterflies - please don't do this.

Is this a question or a statement?

Anyways, please be nice to butterflies and don't do this.

Please don't do this. I'm with L.R....don't start your marriage with something that is cruel to a living being.

Oh wow I've been so overwhelmed and scatterbrained with the wedding that I did not think of this! I'm glad I suggested this to you ladies because I don't wanna do this now. Thanks!

This is not a good idea. Any type of animal release: butterflies, birds, etc is cruel, and anything like a balloon is bad for the environment.

    ETA: just saw your update.

Smiley smile Way to take advice!!! Smiley smile

@Maria- thank you for sharing your change of heart! Read a horror story where there was a release and apparently the butterflies were wrapped in paper packets. However it was done, the packets ended on the chairs to be released later and most guests ended up sitting on them, stepping on them or the butterflies died due to the heat of the day. It was horrifying to read.

My sister went to one wedding, where they did this. A lot of the butterflies were dead in the box. Others flew and crashed. Everyone was horrified.

Don't do this. My DOC actually has that she will not participate in any wedding with a live insect or animal release.

Thank you so much for changing your mind. You may want to update your original post, so people know you aren't going to do this. Some people don't read the comments, and people are understandably upset about potential animal abuse.

Yikes!! Wasn't considering a butterfly release but it wasn't obvious to me how horrible it can be. So sad. Thanks for updating your original post! Smiley smile

First off you need to order from a reputable company. You need to properly research and know what areas butterflies migrate to and when. Strict care instructions are given and most do not follow this. If you are doing this never leave the butterflies in shipping sleeves to release. Individual boxes need to be bought and most skimp on this step not wanting to pay up to $5 per individual box.

I am a hobby bee keeper too. You must research research research before purchasing any living thing to provide the best living conditions. As my FH is part America Indian we will have butterflies as part of the traditional service.

My planner pointed the butterfly release out on our list of options at our venue...to tell us not to do it. Glad you've decided not to!

Just wanted to point out that it is animal cruelty to the butterfly's and also the meat and animal-based products that would be given at the reception. Hope this helped as a reminder to those who want to start off their marriage without animal abuse and cruelty.
