Bustle question for a dress with a slit

Jennifer, on March 9, 2021 at 3:51 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 3 11
I’m just curious if anyone has experience with bustling a dress that has a slit in it? I’ve done some google searches but nothing comes up really. I know when they bustle the back, the front of the dress gets pulled a little so would this open the slit up?! I have an appointment with a seamstress on Saturday but of course I can’t stop thinking about it! Attached pictures of the dress from the front and the side (so you can see the slit). Thanks in advance! Bustle question for a dress with a slit 1

I’m sure the seamstress will figure something out at your next appointment, but did you ever think of one of those little wrist loop things? I’d imagine that might get annoying, but I figured I’d throw that out there. Maybe the seamstress could even somehow sew a portion of the very top of the slit so it doesn’t spread wide open when you’re dropping it like it’s hot on the dance floor Lol

    Ask your seamstress

Hahaha! The dropping like it's hot will definitely be happening! I would like to avoid the wrist loop if I can. I just feel like it will get in the way. I am sure they will have some ideas, I was just getting inpatient (Lol) and hoping someone on here would have been in this situation before. Very weird that I couldn't find anything with my online sleuthing!

If you don't want the slip opening up, maybe you can ask the seamstress to put in a couple of buttons along the slip

    Great dress!

Before doing the bustle, you overlap the sides of the slit, and pin or clip it closed. Then you design, or fasten the skirt up in the bustle, making sure there is no pulling at the fabric toward opening it. Then, unfastened, it hangs straight down til you move.
If your dress is fit tight, so it pulls open, the seamstress will put a fastener at several points to keep it closed.

My dress has a front center slit and I was worried about the same thing. My seamstress suggested a 5-point French bustle (under bustle) and it looks great. No pulling at all. Speak with your seamstress and she what she says!

My sister just got married in this dress and she had a really simple two-point bustle at the waistline. It didn't pull and the only time the slit was available was when she was intentionally standing so it would!

Anyone ever attempted a ballroom bustle on a dress with a slit? I've been research how to do this for some dresses for non wedding events where the hem may need to change. For example, I ballroom dance and need the hem on my dresses about ankle length for black tie events, but there are occasions where I'd like the true floor length.
