Burlap for Rustic theme...Is it worth it?

Michelle, on June 26, 2012 at 7:48 PM Posted in Style and Décor 0 23

Hi all. Just getting into planning for my March 30th wedding. I am really loving the simple rustic look with mason jars, lace and wood etc. Are the burlap chair sashes and the burlap runners worth it? I am on a very tight budget. I'm not very DIY either. My venue provides chair sashes, and overlays to match. Was thinking champagne overlay. But wavering...thoughts either way? Maybe ways to bring in the rustic look otherwise? Thank you all!

You can get burlap from home depot, lowes, ace- hardware stores, like 3'x24' for like $15-17 bucks. Depending on how many tables- it could be VERY economical for table runners- I woulnd't know where to being w/chair sashes. Plus, chair sashes of burlap would be scratchy or itchy. Smiley smile I'm getting the burlap and making runners myself- all it is is cutting, I think I can handle that. Plus, over the ends of the tables where the runners end- I'm going to tie them off with twine, so stop any fraying and to dress them up- I got the inspiration from a photo that seems to have vanished... ugh. I's simple, easy and cute. I promise.

I think I'm going to do burlap for my wedding too. Its not super expensive for table runners, but it would go even further if you buy the roll from home depot and use small pieces to wrap your mason jars, bouqets, centerpieces, etc.

I'm doing burlap at my wedding. I would say pass on the burlap chair sashes and just do the table runners. I got all my burlap from Joann's and used 50% off coupons that they would have weekly. My aunt is actually making the runner for my head table and making runners for my other tables. The runners on the other tables are lined with lace.

Like nichole, i wouldn't do the sashes. burlap is super cute for rustic decor on the tables, but it's scratchy, so don't put it on chairs. that wouldn't be to comfortable for anyone :\

Awesome feedback ladies. Thank you. I think I am going to go with the runners. I have been saving jars and made a trip to GoodWill today. The tables and chairs are going to be covered in white. Do you think I should stick with the champagne colored sashes for the chairs? I think I might need to see it... Or maybe white sashes and some sort of small burlap detail on the back?

Thanks for the coupon tip Nichole!

I am doing burlap for my big day too!! Yay!! We are going with burlap tablecloths and colored runners. I went a lil overboard in ordering stuff so I have several burlap tablecloths if anyone needs them for their food tables, cake tables, ect. We had them custom made. I believe we have about 4 extra. They are 90 by 132(fits a standard 6 foot rectangle table)

@Michelle I personally wouldn't get satin sashes because to me it doesn't go with the burlap theme. Just my personal opinion though. I'd do the burlap on the jars but you don't want to overdue the burlap.

Check out pinterest...you'll find a lot of ideas on there!

This is our theme --- we made burlap table runners for pretty cheap, and easy too. For even more inexpensive decor ideas -- we bought $1 wood picture frames and painted them with reg paint/chalkboard paint for table numbers, used fabric strips in our colors to wrap silverware, to tie around favor boxes...

@ dragonfly- you are the best. I had pinned this pic months ago and for w/e reason, it isn't on my board anymore and though I know I'm not going to forget to do it- I was worried I might in the commotion of the wedding day. lol. Thanks! Puls, my FH loves the look of the tie around the burlap from THIS pic, it sold him on the "rustic" feel we are going for and I like to remind him when he starts questioning our direction... love you right now!! Smiley smile

I am doing the same theme, but no chair sashes. Burlap is so easy to work with, its on a ton of my stuff! For the chairs, I think the champagne color would look great, but I would try to stray away from Satin. I think the polyester softer look works much better Smiley smile search my posts and you can see some of my stuff Smiley smile

Don't do burlap sashes Smiley sad imagine wearing adress having burlap rub your back all through dinner yuck. I know my grandma wouldn't appreciate not being comfortable sitting.

choose to do runners instead to incorporate.

If your budget is tight I wouldnt waste it on sashes of any kind. you're better off putting that money into a few midnight apps.

Thanks all. I think chair sashes are out. The venue has chair that are kinda ugly. They cover the chairs for free and include sashes. I am going to see if i can get a look and see if its better without a sash or with the plain white sash. Again thank you all!

I got yellow burlap on fabric.com and found a coupon. I think to make 18 runners for size 3x8 tables, I spent around $80. FH even cut them for me Smiley smile no sewing necessary!

My decorator is doing some burlap in ours since it is a fall wedding. I think if you can afford it go with it because I like the look of it at weddings.

@Justine a...totally thinking the same thing. Was thinking of using the white chair cover. If it's ok alone then leave it. If not, then white chair sash and something maybe like twine or raffia (sp?) Like a bow or flower or something. I saw someone made burlap flower but i don't know if I'm DIY enough to make 150 burlap flower! LOL Thanks for all the ideas!!
