Bulky dress

Km42118, on April 9, 2017 at 6:35 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 22

I put on my wedding dress today, just to make sure I wasn't gaining weight. With all the material it makes me look bulky in all the wrong places. Its an Aline/sort of fit and flare dress. Will alterations fix this? I'm contemplating on buying a more light weight dress because of this. I'm not used to looking thick, I've always been slim. I'm a size 0 but I bought a size 2 just in case. Maybe I'm growing into my adult body? Lol. Makes me kind of depressed. I didn't take a picture, sorry.

I guess when I first tried on the dress at the shop they clip tight to make it look appealing. But now I'm questioning it.

You are a size zero and worried about looking bulky??? Pretty sure that's impossible. How old are you?

It's always better to order bigger.

    I wish I was a size 2.

    I'm a street size 14 & my dress is an 18.

I went on Monday. Tried the dress on and it's very big up top. I am adding cups into the dress and it does need to be taken in.

I can't imagine ordering a smaller size. It would be to scary to worry about weight gain.

I am sure proper alterations will have it fitting the way it should and you won't feel so bulky.

Pfft I'm a 14 and I feel like a skinny goddess in my aline dress.

That being said OP, does your dress have a zipper back? Switching it to a corset back could help a lot! It'll make it tight in all the right places to make your torso look very trim Smiley smile

I'm sure the alterations will make it perfect for you. Don't worry about the sizing on the dress. It doesn't mean anything. You are the size you are. Don't worry about it. It's okay to "grow into your adult body"

I loved my dress when I tried it at the bridal shop, hated it when I got it delivered and tried it on, loved it again when I went for my first alterations appointment.

Keep in mind when trying on at home that it's not all clipped back and fitted to you. It will be stunning once it's on and you've had alterations done, I'm sure of it.

I think it's ugly to assume that she was extremely young because she's a size 0.

That aside, I'm sure it looks beautiful on you! Don't second guess yourself.

FutureMrsBarton- THANK YOU! I am a street 0-2 depending on the designer and we ordered my wedding gown in a 00, it doesn't need much alteration. But it makes me so cranky when people assume I am 18 and write me off because "you're skinny and small"

OP- Yes alterations will help. If you ordered a size up then it will look awkward in places, especially if its not how they had it clipped at the bridal salon. You have a lot of time. Don't worry, I am coming into my body as well and I just turned 28.

In @Erin's defense, I was wondering how old the OP was as well since she made the comment "maybe I'm just growing into my adult body." Since she's 29, that's obviously not the case. But that was the comment that made me think OP was young, not the fact that she's a size 0.

@Future Mrs. Barton- it was the "growing into adult body" comment that made me question her age. Not her size. Yes it was an assumption. I apologize OP. I grew out of my teenage size of 0 when I was 18. Everyone is different. Definitely just get alterations and know that the chances of staying so tiny aren't realistic at your age.

My seamstress has recommended adding tiny weights to my dress (more of a trumpet) to keep the bottom layers from bunching. We're gonna test it out next appointment.

The clips they put on you in the shop are to show you what the dress will look like when fitted properly, so chances are alterations will fix any flaws you see. The dress is ordered to fit your largest measurement, be that bust, hips, or waist, etc, so naturally the other areas that are smaller will look a bit shapeless until properly altered to you. You have a year until your wedding but it might help to see a seamstress just for a consultation so she can show you what can be done. That way you can decide whether or not you truly need a new dress.

Where is your dress adding bulk? If you have multiple layers to the skirt, your seamstress may be able to remove one of two of them to slim it down a little bit. Otherwise, it may just need to be taken in.
