Buffet vs. Sit-down

Cindy, on February 27, 2010 at 10:00 PM Posted in Planning 0 37

Ok, I'm debating having a Buffet vs. a Sit-down Dinner. I thought of Buffets as tacky at first but I'm thinking maybe it might be the better option now. I was wondering what you guys are all doing.

I am doing a buffet (though I am not doing a traditional dinner so that was a deciding factor). I like buffets though because people can eat a little of everything or just the stuff they like. I have been to a lot of weddings that have buffets (more than the ones that have a sit down dinner). and they have never seemed tacky to me.

Mine is a plated sit down dinner. But that is the only option my venue had. Buffet isn't tacky. I like the idea of it because your guest will only pick items they like. That's the problem I have with plated dinners. There is usally more waste.

FH and I don't like the idea for our own wedding. I'm not saying that it's not as nice or the food isn't good. For us, it was less expensive, we felt it was a more formal option and i have the smell of sternos under chaffing dishes for a buffet LOL

We are doing buffett. It's less expensive and about 90% of the weddings I have been to are buffett. I think a lot depends on you caterer. I love ours!

A buffet can be tacky if you don't manage it properly. but that doesn't have to be the case. we are doing a plated dinner but seriously considered the buffet. ultimately, there wasn't much cost difference so we just decided to go with plated. but here's how our venue does buffet. everyone is served a plated salad. the servers make plates for the head table. they just put a little of everything on the plate. by the time the last tables are served their salads, the first tables served are invited to the buffet by the servers. i've gone to other events that went this way and it runs really smoothly.

Even though the buffet are cheaper we are having a sit down dinner. We decided to cut the cost with the time we are having our reception. At our venue Saturday evenings were $100.00 per plate having to guarantee 150 people, but for a luncheon reception it's $100.00 per plate only having to guarantee 50 people.

I am only looking into buffet options. I think it's cheaper and it gives more choices.

The highest I saw the buffet being is $60 a person.

Right now I'm looking at a place that is less then $20 a person.

FH and I are having a sit down dinner because my FH really wanted the food to be as fresh as possible, and you can't get any fresher then cooked as ordered same as going to the restaurant. We got really lucky with the price it's still only going to cost us about $38 p/p with 1/2 cost for kids and $16 off for venders. And the down side is, is that dinner will rake about 2 hours from order to finished eatting. I'd say just taste the food from the venues and try to figure how you want it to go.

Right now I am leaning on buffet. Since we might have to semi self-cater this would be best for us. If I can find more moeny for our budget I would like to do a sitdown meal.

I'm doing the buffet because I hate it whenever I was invited to a wedding having to choose months in advanced what I was going to be in the mood for that day. This way I get to have more then one meal on the menu and people will have plenty of chooses on what they want. Now I don't have too keep track on who is a vegetarian and who is on a diet Smiley tongue

I am doing buffet. It's cheaper, gives guests more choices, and they get to go back for seconds at their convenience. Food will be there all night.

We're doing buffet instead of seating because it's saving about $20 per person. We aren't having a lot of people, and the venue is managing the service, so we're OK. I would have preferred seated meal, but our venue is pricey, so I needed to sacrifice. I still think it will be lovely.

I like stations instead of a buffet that is in a straight line. Seems to encourage more mingling and less waiting in line. Buffets people can take as much as they want. But I've never seen someone ask for seconds with a plated dinner. So if your group has some hearty eaters that might be the way to go.
