Buffet reception?

I'm so torn in my opinion about buffet receptions. I feel like if you have a classy enough venue with quality food that a buffet doesn't come across as super tacky but as a guest at a wedding it is really nice to have your food brought to you instead of waiting in a line. Thoughts? Opinions?

Its totally up to you. We had originally thought to do buffet (there were 3 different food packages at our venue) but it was actually the most expensive package to do the buffet so we are doing plated. It's dinner. You're feeding your family and friends / loved ones. It's not tacky, just personal preference Smiley smile

Either way is good hosting unless you're having black tie in which case then you'd need a plated meal. Personally, I prefer buffets!

We are doing a buffet. It was $700 cheaper for the exact same menu. There was no question.

I have a cousin who thought buffets were the cardinal sin of weddings. The thing I remember about her wedding is that her omg-so-fancy plated dinner tasted like cardboard.

TLDR; quality food matters more than presentation.

We did buffet because it was a brunch and we had a wide variety of choices that weren't going to float everyone's boat; it was great that folks could choose exactly what they wanted. Our venue also didn't have an actual kitchen, just a prep room, so plated would have been impossible.

I had a bad experience wihmth cold food at a wedding that was plated, never an issue at buffet weddings, so we're doing buffet.

I prefer to be served but to each his own! Everyone's different and I don't think any less of a wedding that's buffet style.

You're feeding me that's good enough for me!

I'm a super picky eater, and I really prefer buffets because I feel like I waste less food that way by only getting what I'll actually eat.

I'm not a buffet person but I wouldn't call it tacky. I prefer plated so I (as the bride) don't have to wait in line for my food or get my own food. I think it also saves time when your meals are plated versus waiting in a line to get your food

I've been to so many weddings, both in grand ballrooms and also in more casual settings... and they've all had buffet. However, in all of those weddings, either the hotel that the wedding was in or the caterers that they chose, the bride/groom at least were served plated, if not the entire wedding party. If you have a good buffet captain that can gauge the flow of the buffet, you shouldn't have to worry about standing in too long of a line. Me, personally, I prefer the options of eating at buffets and not being rushed to finish my food before it's supposed to be cleared.

I've only been to one wedding that was buffet so it's not something I'm used to but it's getting to be more common.

I personally think plated is nicer, I don't want my guests to work on my day by even serving themselves food!Smiley smile

I had the best time and the most delicious food at a recent buffet wedding! I personally could seriously care less about if I get a damn steak or if it's a seated dinner. As a woman (and soon to be bride) I know the struggle of paying for a wedding on my own,and if I am attending a wedding it is for someone I care about. They are doing what they can and at what they can afford.

I agree that it's about the quality of the food, not how it's served - so long as there's enough food and not a massive wait. We're doing plated because it's cheaper and FS prefers it.

Before I read some of these forums, I never knew a buffet wedding reception was considered tacky. Buffets are almost the norm in my area (and honestly there is not really a cost difference between plated), people just prefer them. You get more choice at a buffet, and of the few plated dinner receptions I been to the food wasnt good and I wish I would have had another option.

I hate waiting in line, balancing a plate and drink, etc. I much prefer a plated meal.

We're having a black tie wedding with a buffet. It's going to be set up I stations though not a buffet line. We had a tasting last night and OMG the food was absolutely incredible.
