Buffet Menu

Private User, on February 10, 2016 at 12:48 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 16

We're planning on doing a buffet rather than a seated dinner, trying to figure out if it's worth an extra $200 to print off menus for each table setting. Also, is it worth the stress to do a seating chart if we are doing a buffet?

I wouldn't do a seating chart or a menu. It'll be fine. Maybe just a table number, but not a specific seat.

You need at least assigned tables, but nah I wouldn't worry about menus.

No menus, I'd assign tables but not seats.

I wouldn't do menus but I would definitely label each item!

You don't have to print individual menus for each place setting, but you could still do a menu. this is what I did (the pic is the mock up from the Etsy seller before I gave final approval) I had one menu made from an Etsy seller and then printed it in a large format at Office Max, framed it in a 16x20 frame and had it displayed on an easel near the buffet so that guests could look at it while they were in line and know what was being offered. I also had her make files for smaller, tented cards, listing each individual item and had them placed in front of each dish (I don't have pics of those handy). They came out really nice and it was very budget-friendly.

ETA: definitely do a seating chart to assign tables.

Just assign tables and call it a day with seating. Our venue labeled what each dish was and the components of it. No menu needed. Don't waste the paper or extra money.

We are doing a buffet as well. We aren't doing a menu, but are definitely having a seating chart. I've been to weddings without a seating chart, and couples and families weren't always able to sit together.

I asked about menus at the tables a few weeks ago. Most people said they were necessary, but as a guest would appreciate knowing what is on the buffet before getting in line. It would help them decide if they wanted a little more of one item or should save room for something else. You could do a couple for each table instead of each place setting to save money if you choose to do them. I am still undecided whether I'm going to do them or not.

My problem with a large frame and easel is having to transport them to and from the venue and what to do with them afterward. I'd rather pay a little extra to not have to deal with that.

I'm putting the menu on my website so people will know what the food choices are before they even arrive.

I don't think it's necessary to have a menu for everyone. If you really wanted guests to have them before, you could have one displayed at each table, but I honestly think a large display in the line with labels on the food itself would be fine.

I'd also at least assign tables if you don't want to do a specific seating chart.

@Kimi...ask at your venue if they have easels. Mine had several available for brides to use so I didn't have to worry about purchasing or transporting. And as for the frames...choose one that would go with your home decor maybe so you could re-use it with a wedding photo perhaps? Or re-sell on a bride-2-bride site maybe? Having a couple displayed on the table is a good option too though, and I agree that as a guest I'd like to know what the options are before getting in line so I could kind of make up my mind on what I wanted and not end up holding up the line!

I'm having a buffet dinner too and having menus didn't cross my mind. There were some great alternatives recommended by the ladies.

I wouldn't spend that much money on menu cards. Spend it somewhere else Smiley winking

As for seating chart... think of how many guests you have and if they know each other well. You know your crowd - we don't.

I didn't have seat or table assignments. The wedding was mostly family and it worked out perfectly. If you don't assign seats, you will need to have extra seats available as people won't necessarily arrange themselves into neat groups of 8 or 10

We did a large menu sign at the start of the buffet line and everyone seemed fine with that.
