Buffet Etiquette Question

Meagan, on May 29, 2014 at 3:01 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 13

We are having our wedding catered buffet-style and (obviously) are paying per person. However, we are slightly concerned that there are some family members that are notorious for going back through the buffet line a second or third time. How do we handle this?? Is there a polite way or a polite sign we could perhaps put up asking that people only go through one time or do we just order an additional few meals in anticipation for them? Thanks!

Umm you assume that your caterer is professional enough to know that different people eat different amounts of food. You say or do nothing.

Don't do anything - the caterer is a professional and will take this into account. There is almost always leftover food at weddings.

We typically assist the caterer in sending the tables up in some type of order... That keep the line flowing with new tables until all of the tables have been served. After all the guests have been through it shouldn't matter.

We are having an open house-type of reception, so people will come and go and there is no official order we call people up to get food. I think we've decided on having a carving station and salad/fruit sides.

Is there a max amount of times a person can go up? I've never heard of that before. I mean obvious people shouldn't eat 5 times but I think this is a bit overkill.

As others have said, if it's catered, your caterer should make enough to take this into consideration. If you're really worried, pad your estimate by a guest or two.

You definitely shouldn't put a sign up...buffet price should include the caterer knowing that people will go up for seconds.

Yeah I've never heard if people not being "allowed" to go up to a buffet a second time. The caterer should make enough for people to have seconds.

I definitely wouldn't do anything and especially say anything. As people mentioned, caterer will take care of it.

Personally, if I was a guest at your wedding and you had a sign up saying I can only go up once. I would think it is quite rude and that you don't understand the concept of a buffet. Buffet implies all you can eat. As a guest, I would also be considerate of other guests. I wouldn't go up for seconds until I know everyone has gone up at least once.

No need for a sign. Your caterer will ensure enough food for people to have a good dinner. If someone goes back for thirds and there is no more food (super unlikely!!!) well, too bad haha.I don't expect to go to a wedding, buffet or otherwise, and stuff my face

Caterer's know people go back to buffets for second and even thirds so they make enough food. I have never heard of a buffet only allowing people to have one plate.
