Brunch Reception Music Dilemma... What would you do?

Anne, on September 26, 2017 at 7:57 AM Posted in Planning 0 12

We're having a daytime brunch reception and an after party. The plan has been to have an iPad and speakers for the brunch since we expect minimal dancing and we hired a DJ for the after party (where we expect lots of dancing). This past weekend we went to test our speakers in the space and it's clear they do not cut it as it's a tall space and the sound just disappears. The venue has a small sound system that is good for background music but nothing louder than that. Plus if we use the venue's sound the iPad will be behind the bar which isn't convenient. Now my mom is saying just hire a DJ and she'll pay for it, but my parents have already contributed a lot and I feel bad accepting anymore from them. We could rent larger speakers but then would have to worry about picking them up, setting them up, breaking them down, etc. The other option is a much cheaper college kid DJ who we originally got a quote from but didn't trust his level of experience. Blah... I don't like any of my options.

I doubt your mom would have offered if she didn't mean it. It seems like a lot of trouble to rent.

How much are a set of speakers to rent? It can't be that much, compared to hiring a DJ.

I get your reservation about wanting to go full-on DJ for the morning: I wouldn't probably dance if I was a guest. I'd see if you can get a quote for a set of larger, nicer speakers. They shouldn't be that hard to set-up and take down.

How long is the brunch reception? Can you all find an affordable DJ for the brunch part? Is your mom happy to pay for the DJ? Our daughter felt the same way about hiring a videographer......she didn't want to ask for one since we are paying a good portion of the wedding. If your mom is like me, I am super happy to be able to provide that for her. (Will you be doing first dances at the brunch?)

A good set of speakers is about $100 to rent... not bad at all. We will be doing first dances at the brunch. Brunch is much less expensive to host than dinner (as the restaurant can still open for dinner the venue costs were much lower), and we love breakfast food! At the same time, we still want to boogie!!

Aye. Just accept the money from your mother. If she didn't have the money, she wouldn't offer.

Send her a heartfelt thank you card, treat her to dinner and a movie one day - just show your appreciation and love.

Interesting. I've never heard of a brunch wedding with a big after party. We decided to hire a classical guitarist for both the ceremony and reception because a DJ seemed out of place at a brunch garden reception. We also hired a sound technician so we wouldn't have to worry about any logistics with ceremony mics, speeches, music, etc. I'm very glad we did that because it would have been a nightmare trying to figure that out ourselves.

OH boy, now I am starting to worry... We are having a sunday wedding with brunch and after party. mom is stressing DJ, and I just don't know that everyone will want to dance. I am thinking the party will be done around 3pm? I must test the ipod now! we are in a small facility so, I am hoping it will work. Basically just doing the first dance and then free for all.

Side note... what time is the after party? People aren't in the mood to party at brunch weddings. I went to one. I think a few of us danced out of respect, but no one stayed around long.

@Chelsey, that's what I thought too, and why I did not want a DJ. I hope technology works Smiley smile

I guess I don't understand. You're not expecting people to dance at brunch, so you're using an iPad for background music? But it's a problem that the venue's sound system is only good for background music?

If it's truly just for ambient music, create playlist, set the iPad up with the venue's system, hit play and forget it.

If you actually want people to dance at brunch, hire a DJ.
