My brother is going to be a groomsman in our wedding. We are only having 4bridesmaids and 4 groomsman bc we want a smaller bridal party. My brother is going to be a groomsman in our wedding. We are only having 4bridesmaids and 4 groomsman bc we want a smaller bridal party. There are plenty of friends I would want as bridesmaids but had to cut to keep the bridal party small. We just told my brother he would be a groomsman and he just text me asking if his long time gf can be a bridesmaid. I like her, but have several closer friends who are not bridesmaids. How do I even respond to this??

It bothers me that he said "can you do me a favor"

Let us know the reasoning for this favor

That's ridiculous! I would just say "sorry I can't. I already chose my bridesmaids."

This actually happened to me sort of. It was FH's brother's gf (now fiance). I had already announced my five bridesmaids, whom I am much closer to than her. I just told FBIL no. She was upset, but such is life.

    "No" is a complete sentence.

    Why?

Tell him no! That is rude of him to ask that. You choose your girls, not anyone else. If you don't want her in it/wasn't planning on it, then tell him no that you already have your BM picked out.

I would just tell him that you're already set on the bridal party. If they are worried that she is going to be on her own the whole night I might reassure them that you'll seat them together and she'll be invited to the rehearsal dinner and all that stuff because she is his girlfriend. They should only really be separated during the ceremony and pictures.

If it's his longtime girlfriend she'll know the family and won't feel awkward.

The only reason to make her a bridesmaid would be because you want her to. Since she didn't make the list of 4, it's a no. I'd be honest and tell him you already picked your bridal party. Don't feel forced to include her in the ceremony if you don't want to.

I find this extremely rude for him to put you in that situation. Its your day and if you've already decided then he shouldn't have even said anything. If you feel comfortable with it, you could always let her come hang out with you and your BMs before (while he gets ready with the guys) so she still feels kind of included just not in the actual ceremony?

Woah, not cool to put you in that position. Say exactly what you wrote here and tell him no. He should understand

How long have they been dating? And why does he want her to be a bridesmaid? Just curious.

I wasn't in my FSIL's wedding even though my FH was. Was I hurt? No. Ultimately it's YOUR wedding. Invite who YOU want to be in it. She can just be a guest.

If my brother asked me that I would probably laugh and say, "Come on dude. You know I can't do that." But that's the dynamic between my brother and I. He should know better than to ask something like that in the first place.

^ good point. Why is it so difficult for people here to talk to their family members like adults...?

The "can you do me a favor" makes it seem like there's a bigger issue that can be solved in a way that doesn't involving putting her in the bridal party. Like others have said, do away with the head table so she can sit with him at dinner, etc. Figure out what your brother's (or his girlfriend's) concerns are and see if you can address them without having to make her a BM.

Just tell him no. I don't feel you need to go out of your way to make her feel special when you even said yourself your closest friends are not even bridesmaids. Treat her like any other guest.

My little brother is a groomsman in my wedding and his long time gf is not a bridesmaid BUT I have requested for her to hang out with us while we get ready & help guide people the day of. (Outside weddings can never have enough hands on deck!) she was so excited to be able to take part in the day. I just love her to death, but they're 19 and whose to say that she will even still be around when I get married? Would rather her not be a bridesmaid than me have to scramble to replace her last minute should her and my brother decide it isn't working between them and she seems totally on board with it all, even though I didn't quite spell it out for her.
