Bridesmaids - same length or different length dresses?

Katherine, on July 11, 2015 at 12:51 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 12

We have been having a difficult time finding dresses that flatter all of the girls. One store we've liked is Alfred Angelo. We've eliminated David's Bridal. I'm thinking that if it's not Alfred Angelo, we will be going with either Kennedy Blue or Eshakti. The difficulty deciding is this: do I ask the girls to get the same length dress (then the lengths will vary greatly, as tallest will be 6 feet in heels and shortest will be around 5'0-5'2) or do I have them do varying lengths so that there is hopefully a more even line among the girls? Does anyone have pictures of their girls being different heights with the same length dress or different lengths of dress?

tallest girl: calf length

medium girls: knee length

most petite (shortest) girl: knee length or above knee length

I would get the same length dresses. Alterations can be expensive. Here's a picture of my bridal party...shortest girl is 5'2" and the tallest in heels is probably about 5'10". The dresses are uneven but I didn't even notice.

The girls on the ends are pretty tall and the blonde to the right of the bride is about 5'1" As you can see, the dresses are all about the same length on the girls but they don't all necessarily make a straight line across the bottom. Hope that helps. Edited for clarity.

    Pick the same length.

I had girls ranging in height from 5 foot nothing to 6 feet tall (and the 6 footer wore heels). I didn't notice the difference.

If you "assign" a length to each girl depending on their height, I still don't think you're going to get the same length on everyone. There's just too much variation. I think you're over thinking this--tell them a material and a color (and a designer if you want the color to be an exact match) and a length and it'll look great!

A real easy solution to that (if it's a look you like) would be to have everyone in floor length dresses. Those are of course going to hit at the same place no matter how tall the girl is because they all go to the floor! My BMs were actually thrilled that I chose long dresses because they apparently thought they were more flattering. Other than that I really don't think it will make too much difference though. I don't think anyone will be paying too much attention to if the dresses hit at the same place on the different girls so I would say just go with what you (and they) will like the most.

My girls had different lengths but the tops all looked the same. 2 of my girls felt the short dresses were all too short and it was the middle of May so I didn't want to force long dresses and them be hot. Sorry I don't have a better pic yet

Same length is always best. If you want to mix things up you can do different styles (all long or short ) or different colors that go well together. My maids were two different shades of blue/green , same dress. Not all my girls are the same height either.

I tend to prefer floor length gowns. Not only are they flattering on everyone, but they add a level of formality to your honor attendants. We did a wedding last night and the bridal party were all dressed in the same gorgeous, short, nude dresses with a soft pink overlay (they looked blush pink and had beautiful movement because of the overlay). While I was watching the guests and the bridal party move from the outside ceremony area to cocktail hour, I realized that the only reason I knew the bridal party was the bridal party was because they were all walking together and were carrying their bouquets. I saw many other young women in similar types of dresses in solid colors. So, to me, the long gown still add something special. Just my opinion.

I prefer when the dresses are the same length.

My girls aren't wearing matching gowns, however I asked them to all keep the dresses floor length and no one shoulder.

Thank you everyone! What beautiful pics! The photos and tips have really helped! I see now that different heights makes no difference in photos Smiley smile So! I will be going for same designer, same fabric, same color, same or different styles, either knee-length, floor length, or both.

@tucker, the dresses you chose are very similar to the color and style I want for my girls Smiley smile

ETA: @tucker, where did you get the BM dresses?

Good plan NatureGirl! I think as long as you have one thing the same (length, colour, style...) It will look good, but still gives the girls room to personalize a little Smiley smile
