Bridesmaid Umbrella or No Umbrella

Lanise, on April 1, 2019 at 6:56 PM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 0 29
I thought since I'm having a summer wedding why not have umbrellas for the Bridesmaids to keep the Sun out their face or could help keep their hair in place

I love parasols. If I were having a summer outdoor wedding I would definitely do those instead of flowers

I think they are so cute! I’d suggest getting honest feedback from the bridesmaids too.

Parasols are nice. But it depends how long you expect women to hold them. For a short while, they are very pretty, and not hard to hold. Pretty pictures. But during an outdoor receiving line, or generally circulating for a cocktail on the patio type thing, they are exhausting to hold one hand up to keep the parasol overhead for more than 20 minutes. Your hand sweats, and arm sweats where you hold the upper arm close to your body to hold the parasol up and out. And it is impossible you hold your parasol, even folded, and walk around or serve yourself anything, as a pretty white one cannot be put down on any less than perfectly clean surface without staining. It also means you need a shoulder strap purse. I have only carried one in two weddings. The first was 15 minutes for a ceremony, then about 20 minutes for pictures. Then bride heard complaints from her two sister in BP, and said, just carry them folded. By the time we went in for dinner, mine had awful stains where I rested it on a table, where something must have been spilled, clear but sticky. Grease stains, too. Other ladies had similar issues- cranberry juice sloshed from a cocktail, someone sat on one a BM left on a chair, and bride's two sister's sons picked up folded parasols, had a duel, and got one all bloody poking the father who tried taking them away. The 2nd time, the bride was from down south, and said up front, I love these, but they can be a PITA. And she had silky polyester cases with wrist loops that folded up smaller than a hankie, so any time furled, they could dangle. And all our places at our tables, outdoors under a canopy, had a $1 type plastic cable clip on the edge of our table, except command hooks on one with a different surface, a place to keep they clean and stored, when not in use. All the difference in the world, a bride who knew there was a limit to the time one could comfortably carry one, and the hazards of sticking them any old place when trying to serve from a buffet of appetizers, or at a drinks or meal table. So while parasols are pretty, they require a little planning. But I liked carrying them instead of a bouquet, very much, during the outdoor ceremony. . . . A friend bride of my sister's did not get semi-sheer wedding parasols. She bought big umbrellas, as there was a likelihood of rain in April in Boston, and Bridal party was walking not riding 200 feet from the church, out steps, across a plaza, and crossing the street to the reception hotel. They were great. All the ladies had bright poppy blossom umbrellas, the bride and groom were under one with chocolate candies, and the groomsmen had blue skies with white clouds. Great pictures in bright sun, before the ceremony, leaving cars and going in to the church. Coming out to fine mist, going across the plaza, they were great. As all dresses hemmed at 2" above the ground, standard floor length with no trains, no one needed to lift skirts to walk. There was a Boston newspaper printed a photo of them crossing the plaza, with their 42" of decorative umbrellas, and they had great posed pictures with them. I'd say, check out the possibilities. But do walk around a half hour or more, no sitting, with your arm up holding an open parasol ir umbrella, to get a sense of how long people can be expected to carry them open.

Thank you very much; I only want the umbrellas for the Bridesmaids to walk or dance down the aisle and for photos they don't have to hold it any other time long as they know which one is theirs

That will be terrific! We all really enjoyed having them, and for that limited time, they would be fun, and make great pictures.

I don’t know. I guess it would depend on your theme of course. I don’t think this goes with every theme and style. I would also be concern how it would look on pics. If you’re bridesmaids are standing next to you and the sun is coming thru the front would they be tempted to cover their face during ceremony?
This is something you can have an idea by visiting the venue during your ceremony time give and take an hour in case you run behind.
If it matches your theme and style I think for pictures would be really cute. I just don’t know about the ceremony.
