Bridesmaid... how many is too many?

Joanna, on August 21, 2019 at 8:37 AM Posted in Wedding Ceremony 1 10
I may answer my own question with this post, but many minds are better than one! I am trying to select my bridesmaids- I have three sisters that I am super close with and a close knit group of girlfriends. I think I have narrowed it down to my 3 sister and 4 of my girlfriends. My fiancé is only planning on asking 4 or 5. BUT I have two nieces that I am also very close with who will be 19 and 13. I want to include them- should they be junior bridesmaids? Will it be weird for me to have a much larger party than my FH? Do I care?? Why have you all done?

You can have a larger party then you FH, that's not weird, a lot of people have uneven parties. IMO, I would have the nieces be like ushers and hand our programs ( my friend had an October wedding and she had her nieces stand at the end of the aisles while people were walking in to sit handing people cute scarves, it was an outside wedding) or do a reading together or something along those lines so they are still involved, but not standing up with you to make it a little more even. You can really do anything, there are no rules.

Whatever amount is good for you and your budget. There is no set rule on how many or little people you can have in your bridal party. It's about who YOU want up there standing with your on your very special day. If you want them all, go for it! Uneven bridal parties are also alot more common than you think. That's really more so personal preference.

It's totally up to you, but in your shoes I'd have the nieces be ushers. I'd also be tempted to consider having your sisters not be bridesmaids but have some other role in them ceremony, but I don't have siblings and prefer more even parties even though I know it doesn't matter at all.

It's totally your choice but I will say if I could go back in time I wouldn't have had any but my sister as my MOH. It's so much stress and they have caused me more stress arguing and being stubborn in their ways. Not all of them have, just 2 of the 4. I would have your nieces do another job like ushering, if you truly want to have 3 sisters and 4 friends.

I am with this. My first time I had four but if I could go back in time I would have one, my sister. I had one girl drop out a few weeks before (no, I did not "fire" her, lol, she decided to move two weeks before the wedding, we have not spoken since.) But peek through old threads with "Bridesmaid drama" and you will see what we mean!! This time I had my two college aged sons, no females, lol!!

Seven people is a lot, to be blunt but is is your wedding and do not be concerned about uneven numbers.

I would do the 7 bridesmaids and have the nieces hand out programs or have them give a toast or do a reading in the ceremony. I think their ages are way too old to have them be junior bridesmaids. However, it is YOUR wedding so do whatever would make you the happiest love!

I know many people that have had 12-14 on each side because they had so many siblings and friends and it was completely fine. I had 7 bridesmaids and 2 junior bridesmaids (they were ages 12 and 14) and my husband had 6 groomsmen and 2 junior groomsmen the same age. Our bridal party was great, no drama and we appreciated having everyone around us.

In your case, the 9 you are thinking about is fine! 19 is way too old for a junior bridesmaid so make her a regular bridesmaid and the 13 year old a junior. It's not weird to have uneven sides, its actually becoming the norm.

We had a large party. 9 BM and 10 GM. It cost a lot more in gifts, flowers, rehearsal dinner, etc. but it was in our budget. It's a lot more work coordinating that many people but we couldn't cut anyone.

Having an uneven bridal party is totally fine. I feel that the decision is up to you only, but I would remember a bigger BP = more $$$

    IMO: Less is better.

What matters is that the people “standing with you” fully understand the concept, purpose of and value Marriage.

You don’t want someone in a new relationship every time you turn around.

You want someone that’s going to encourage you to work things out when it gets rough, not give you a Divorce Attorney’s number.

    Congratulations!
