Bridesmaid found out shes pregnant...

**Mrs.Smedstad, on May 7, 2014 at 12:23 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 18

So 1 of my bridesmaids just called to tell me she just found out she's pregnant! I am super happy for her! She has been wanting to have a baby, but this was unexpected.

Anyways she's concerned about her dress. She will be 6 months pregnant at my wedding. The dresses were ordered in March, so there's nothing we can do. Her dress was ordered a size big, because she has big boobs and we wanted to make sure those babies would fit in the dress, then the rest could be altered to fit. She is also really short. Her dress will have about 7 inches taken off the bottom. If by chance she doesn't fit in her dress, do you think they can use some of the bottom to add in? Or will the alteration place be able to get fabric to add in..?

This is obviously all new to me.

Has anyone been in the position before?

ETA - Also her and I are not skinny girls, we're plus size. so Its possible she might not get a bigger belly while pregnant.

Where did you get the dresses from? One of my BM's found out she's pregnant and even though she already had her dress, David's let her exchange it for a larger size that she'd fit in.

Do you have a pic of the dress? That could help a lot.

The first time I got married my SIL was due 4 1/2 weeks prior to my wedding date. My nephew was 3 weeks old. We got a dress to hide her tummy in case. Are your dress very fitted or is there room to hide it? Alterations should be able to help you out too. Congrats to her.

The dress is coming from a local small name bridal salon. I am waiting to hear back from them if there is anything they can do.

    Here is the dress.

Its chiffon, so its not super snug feeling. My MOH loved this dress because it hid her pooch lol

If you ordered from David's they have a baby belly pillow thing to try on under the dress to see how it will fit with a baby belly. Remember her books may also get larger.

One of my bridesmaids got pregnant right before we went dress shopping, she wasn't showing yet but the baby bump pillow helped so much in knowing how a dress would fit.

That's a good fabric... so maybe she could squeak by. Only time will tell. Contact the store just in case they can do anything to halt the process (long shot), but I'm glad you're actually HAPPY for her Smiley smile I know sometimes brides get nervous about this.

I would contact the store immediately. One of my bridesmaids is pregnant and ordered her dress up in size at David's, and they told her they could work with her to exchange it before the wedding if she needs a different size.

My MOH was six months pregnant standing up in a wedding last year, and she said the seamstress just cut out the middle of her dress and brought it up a few inches, which gave room for her belly. She said the only difference was her dress was slightly shorter than the other girl's, but it didn't look much different in the pictures.

I had a different friend in a wedding a few years back and they took fabric off the bottom to give her some more belly room. Honestly her dress looked funny being shorter than everyone elses, but in this case hers would still be floor length since she's really short.

I think if they are able to do that and do it under the layer that goes over the top, it would give her more belly room if she needs it. It also helps the dress will already be coming a size bigger than she measured.

Cute dress! And yeah, I'm sure it happens all the time so just wait to hear back from the store. It looks pretty loose so it shouldn't be too much of a problem if it was a size larger, already. Especially the way it drapes, I think it will be fine. But, like others said, ask for her to go back and try it on again with the pillow to see if it will be a problem, before alterations start.

My bridesmaid lives in FL and I am in MN, there's not a way to try it on. Also the sample dress was not a plus size dress, so she wouldn't be able to put it on anyway.

But I just talked to my salon. They said my dresses are going to come in by July at the latest. Can't change the order, and we won't have time to exchange. I have 2 options. She needs to go to where she will have alterations done and see if they will be able to use the fabric off the bottom if they need to, or else my salon can order some extra fabric which will only take 4 weeks to get.

I would call them and let them know but I wouldn't make any changes to the dress until closer to the wedding. I was six months pregnant at my sister's wedding. Every woman is going to be different when they start showing and where they gain weight. For me, my boobs were gigantic while I was pregnant and I was very fortunate to not show until 5 months so I wasn't terribly big in the belly at 6 months. After that it was all over for me though lol. I would wait and see where she needs room. If that dress has a lot of room in the belly area the extra inches in the length may be necessary and she will only need it hemmed two or three inches instead of the 7. I would just wait and see! You don't want to take material and then not have enough! Congrats to her though!!

Here's my preggers bridesmaid Smiley smile She was only four months pregnant in this pic, and she will be about 6 at wedding time. As you can see, she's got room to grow outwards, it's chiffon and not tight around the belly.

One of my BMs found out she was pregnant right when we were getting dresses but she wasn't there to try on and her news wasn't public. I tried to help steer the girls to one that would work without giving away her secret...but since I didn't try the dress on myself I couldn't tell there was an unforgiving sheath underneath. She will be 7 mos at the wedding...so the salon ordered her a different dress in same color. Hers will have an empire waist and they are using what gets cut off another girl's dress when they hem it to make a one shoulder piece so hers looks more like the other girls'. It's different scenario bc she hadn't ordered her dress yet...but...moral of the story is, the people at the salon should be able to help you come up with the best solution. They know what alterations are possible, etc., and the earlier you work on it, the better!

Congrats to your bridesmaid. Three of mine became pregnant and had their babies during our engagement. We started telling people that being in our wedding was a fertility luck charm. We were engaged for quite some time.

    Congrats to your bridesmaid!

Looking at the way the dress falls, she should be okay, though it's hard to tell what kind of bump she'll have. I'd suggest she talks to a seamstress - if she's having it hemmed up 7 inches, as you say, they'll have a ton of material taken off the bottom and they may be able to use that to let the seams out on the side if needed.

On a Side Note, thank you so much, OP, for taking this in stride, and not flipping out as some brides have. Your MOH is plenty grateful, I'm sure!
