Bridesmaid dress help!!

Briana, on May 21, 2020 at 7:30 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 10

Hi everyone! So my bridal party consists of 9 ladies, two being out of state (Colorado & Florida). My wedding is on 10/31/21 and although I have plenty of time, I feel like i'm already in a pickle. I was looking at Davids Bridals website to see what type of dresses they have, and honestly it doesn't look like they have many (none that are flattering to people anyway/ones that we would pick). I was counting on them since everyone has a DB near them. I wanted me and everyone else to have the experience of looking and trying on dresses/deciding, and really don't want to have to end up just buying bridesmaids dresses online, I feel like it takes away from the experience.

I'm not sure what to do at this point. Do I wait and hope that DB has better dresses coming in, do I wait and look in the store instead of just focusing on what is online? If I decide to go to another store where they don't have locations everywhere, I'm not going to make my out of state BM buy a dress with their measurements if they don't even know what it looks like on them, what if they hate it? Obviously if I have to end up doing it online I will, but I would rather not if I can help it.

Any advice would be very appreciated, thank you!

I’m going to probably go the online route because I want the dresses to be affordable and accessible for my bridesmaids. I also live in a different state than most of them. I have been looking at Azazie and you can make a showroom of all the dresses you like and then send it to them. You can also have them send samples to try on. I am going to send them the showroom so they can let me know what styles they like and then I’ll order a few to try on when I am with them all again and we can try them on together. (We can also serve ourselves as much champagne as we want lol) I used this site when I was in a bridal party and it was so easy. If you do want to have them go into a store I think Bella Bridesmaids has multiple locations but I’m not sure about Colorado.

David's Bridal pretty much has the same inventory year to year, especially for bridesmaids dresses. The online inventory is actually more extensive than in stores. Azazie has a lot of great options, and you can try on 3 dresses for $10.

I did azazie. I don’t think they really need the group trying on experience especially considering they’re out of state. Azazie has lots of styles and colors and IMO the fabric is better quality than dB. They can get custom measurements or do the try-on option for $10 or order a standard size and return it if it’s wrong. You pick the styles you want them to choose from and they get a link to make their decision.

I’m doing online for my bridesmaids because i have some out of state people who don’t have DB near them. if you go through azazie they’re reasonable and the girls can order in the size they think they are to try it and if they need to adjust they can return it Smiley smile

I’ve been a bridesmaid 14 times and I can only think of 1 or 2 times where I went and tried on a dress in a store before purchasing. I always preferred when the bride would give me a store and color and let me pick a dress on my own. I never had issues ordering online.

I didn't want to use David's Bridal when I was looking bridesmaids dresses so I went with my girls to three smaller salons, but their options were very limited. They didn't have sizes for some of the girls to try on. They were very expensive and didn't have dresses for them to try on in the color I wanted even though I called a head of time. They ended up getting their dresses from David's Bridal after all. I will say that I didn't really enjoy the experience because everyone had their own opinion and it made deciding on one dress very difficult. If I could do it again, I would have let them pick their own style. If you don't want to use David's Bridal and want to shop in person then I would go to salons with your local girls. I would find a dress you like then have the girls go to a salon near then that carries the dress. Designers usually have a location feature on their website where you can put in a city or zip code to locate stores in your area that sell their dresses. I would recommend if you do this, calling the stores that sell those designers ahead of time to sell if they have the dress in end up choosing before just showing up at the store because they might have other dresses by the designer, but not the one you picked. Otherwise, I would recommend looking online at like Azazie.

All my bridesmaids are out of state or out of country so online was the best option. I didn’t think we missed out on any experience. It’s so much easier for my bridesmaids this way, they can buy the dress whenever they want and they’re all used to buying online so it really wasn’t an issue.
I honestly think that going the online route will be the easiest and I don’t think that your bridesmaids will feel like they’re missing out on the experience of going to a store.

I agree with everyone here - Azazie is a great option. They can send samples to you to try on, and you can do a "try on" party with everyone through zoom or some other video chat option. Then you can get the idea of trying it on together and your local girls can all get together at one person's house and zoom in the out of state girls. This may help you bridge the gap between wanting better dress options, but also wanting the group experience.

In the pro-David's argument, we found a really pretty off the shoulder dress (style F19951 in Marine), that is very flattering on all of my bridesmaids! Three of them ordered online and they all got them in less than three weeks (pre-COVID, though). They do ship from a distribution center in the US (or at least our did).
