Bride with Food Allergies

LittleDemon, on October 17, 2016 at 5:17 PM Posted in Planning 0 28

Today I realized something that I'll need to decide about my catering for the wedding. I have really weird food allergies (carrots and bananas. I know, I know) and absolutely CANNOT be around bananas, but I CAN be around carrots as long as my food isn't touched by any.

So my question is, should I provide food that might contain carrots for my guests, or just skip them all together? I'm super on the fence about it.

Update: Bride realizes she's crazy for thinking this is an issue, should definitely skip them, and is just getting a kick out of the comments now Smiley smile

I should also mention that my reaction to them is in no way life threatening, just extremely exhausting.

These are both easy things for a caterer to skip. I would not trust everyone that works the wedding to be perfect on cross contamination, and I certainly wouldn't trust guests not to fling stuff around if it is in some dishes and not others. No point in risking it when it wont make much difference to exclude them.

I think it would be just fine to work around carrots and bananas. No one will miss them! In fact, I just thought about my menu and I don't think it included either of those things simply by chance.

I think you will be ok if you decide to skip both items.

I definitely wouldn't be missing carrots from my dinner, since i'm really not a big fan of them anyway. I think you just find a menu that you like and meets all of your criteria and food requirements.

That's so much for the input! That's what I was thinking, skip them both just to be safe!

I think, so long as you had a dish that didn't contain carrots, you'd be fine. Not every dish has to have carrots. Or you could forgo them all together. My aunt's wedding offered a lot of vegetables for side options and didn't have any carrots; no one was upset about it.

I feel your pain, though. I'm allergic to red meat. So long as I don't eat it, I'm fine, so FH is happy we can have a red meat option, haha.

Skip them both. No one will notice. And you shouldn't have to worry about that on your wedding day

I think you can get by just eliminating them from the menu all together, or simply subbing them for another veggie if they are in a mixed veggie or something similar.

On the fence about what? I can't remember the last time carrots hit my plated wedding meal or the salad that preceded it.

Sweetie, you have so many options that extend beyond carrots that I'm surprised you're even thinking about this.

Just tell your caterer, "No carrots -- only greens (which are what most of your guests are expecting). Don't use them in the salad (which your guests will not miss)...in fact, don't bring them into the building. I also can't be around bananas, and if you're doing a fruit salad, skip them (good news, because they get brown and mushy quickly)."

    You're good to go.

@Noelle, they're absolutely awful! I've had many an awkward dinner with my FILs because they're serving beef. No one's said anything yet, but I just give FH this look and eat the salad they've made.

Haha don't worry all, it was a passing crazy thought that maybe it would be offensive or something to not include them at all. Who doesn't have those moments? Smiley smile

I totally understand- I have a pretty severe tree nut allergy and the salads that the caterer had all included nuts for a fall crunch. I felt bad for a little bit that I was going to change the food, since I know a lot of people love nuts, but I decided my safety was more important (I have had reactions from nuts in the room and such). We asked the caterer to replace the nuts with pumpkin seeds and I'm fairly certain that no one noticed the difference. Keep yourself safe- excluding carrots and bananas is more than acceptable for wedding food!

@Mrs. P - yikes I'm glad mine are not that bad! We're doing our tasting with the venue in a few weeks so we can tell them then that no carrots are allowed out of the walk-in fridge during our event! And absolutely no bananas in our reception area, If I'm around an opened banana or even just the peel, I start to get light headed so I was never gonna risk that!

    Ah.

    Weird food allergies suck.

I'm allergic to avocado. I will vomit violently for 24 hours if I eat even the SMALLEST amount of it. (makes sushi night fun.)

@Yasmina I was seriously reading this thread to find out if someone else had an avocado allergy! My family thinks it's hilarious. It makes my tongue swell and itch. I found out I was allergic when I found out I liked guacamole.

Skip them both. I don't eat either very often, so I probably wouldn't notice lol. Probably

The same with your guests. Smiley smile
