Bridal Shop ordered the wrong size! Advice!

RebeccaMarie, on April 21, 2016 at 7:12 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 30

I ordered my dress in Nov for my Wedding from a small local bridal shop. I was fitted and she said I was a perfect size 14. After months of nothing, she originally said my dress would be in by Jan. It finally arrived this Monday. But the dress isn't a size 14 but a size 16. The owner said that the company won't send her another dress and they claim she said 16 not 14. The owner thinks it will be fine and I can have the dress taken in. However I've been losing weight for the wedding and I'm concerned about the dress getting altered to fit me whenever I'm now closer to a 12 than the 14 that was ordered in the first place.

Should I demand the owner make this right? I paid for the 14 not the 16. I'm afraid having the dress altered down two sizes will hurt the detail of my gown. I'm afraid it will look bad.

The owner made the mistake not you. Tell them to order the right dress.

I think the dress shop should pay for the alterations because it was their error. Taking it in shouldn't affect the detail of the gown. I had mine taken it and it didn't look different at all.

Does your receipt or order form reflect size 14? If yes, you can ask a seamstress if it will alter the design on the dress to alter it down. If they say yes it will, the shop needs to order a new dress in the correct size. If they say no, the shop needs to pay for all the alterations. If your receipt/order form doesn't show the size, I think you may be stuck with it and the alterations bill.

Talk to an alterations specialist NOW and get a quote for them. If they'll be extensive, the dress shop should pay for some of it.

I agree with PPs! Check your receipt/invoice…if it says size 14 then they should be responsible for either ordering you a new dress or paying for alterations (if taking it in that much will cost extra/alter the detail of the dress). How rude!

My receipt does say a size 14. She said she will have someone do my alternations for free. Here is what my dress looks like I'm concerned about the floral part made with the dress fabric being bigger than expected cause its for someone larger.

I had a similar issue. The store sample was a 12 and it was so tight, I could barely breathe. It was zipped-up all the way, though. I ended up paying $200 plus tax more, to special order it with a corset back. They knew it, but insisted on ordering a 14, because "the sample may have been stretched by other brides, it's been hanging on the hanger for awhile", etc. the same things other brides have heard. The 14 was so big, with the corset, that when tied up, the sides touched. I had to pay $400 in alterations - taken in and later left out - and it never did really fit correctly. (None of that $400 was for hemming. I had paid an additional $150 to get a hollow to hem measurement, with an added couple inches of length).

My dress is corset backing as well. I have an hour glass shape and she was all oh wow I don't even think you'll need to get alterations. You're exactly a 14 in Sophia Tolli.

When I ordered my dress, they measured me, confirmed my measurements, showed me the designers chart, and talked to me about choosing the right size. After getting size approval from me, they filled out the order form which held all my measurements and the size in the notes as well as the field. They had me review and confirm before they saved. The receipt shows all of this. Do you have any of that?

I agree with PPs that if they messed up, it should be their dime. But you have to prove it first.

ETA: Saw your update. A corset back is much easier to alter. And the detail should be fine. That usually isn't noticeably different between one or two sizes. Don't stress until you see a seamstress, discuss your options, and get a quote. Get it in writing from them how much they will put towards the alterations.

Sorry, I'd be telling them to order the dress you paid for. And I doubt if the manufacturer is telling her she can't order another dress. They may be telling her they won't send her the correct size for free, but that isn't your problem.

Good luck. I had the same issue and it was kind of a "too bad for you" situation, they didn't give a shit.

Do you have any paperwork that says you requested a 14?

Edit: Well... I just saw above that you did lol. Make her correct it!!!!

That's what they told her she knows she ordered the wrong size but shes trying to reassure me that her seamstress can take it in without an issue. I'm a tall girl but there is literally nothing in my closet over a size 10 (i realize wedding gowns run different in sizing) so the whole size 16 being too big and losing weight. It makes me afraid to keep working out.

Make them fix it. If they can fix it without ordering a new dress, they should cover the alterations. If not, they should supply you with the correct size dress.

It's not what your comfortable with - it's what you paid for. Stick to your guns. If she keeps trying to convince you it's ok, etc., then calmly explain to her that if she doesn't give you what you paid for that you will demand a full refund. If she still doesn't comply, then tell her you are going to contact the attorney general's office and Better Business Bureau due to their unethical and potentially illegal business practices. Then see what she does.

Plus, demand that she somehow have it sent in two months - i.e. she is financially responsible for a rush order since she did not fulfill her end of the sales/bargain.

Nope. It is there error. They should be getting you a new dress and paying for rush shipping if necessary. Stick by your guns on this one.

If your receipt says size 14, then that's what they have to give you. Not free alterations on a size 16. Stand firm.

Demand them to get it right. All else fails take it ELSEWHERE (do not give them any more business) to have it altered. Dresses can usually taken in about 2 sizes maybe 3 without any ruining of the look
