bridal hair - how much is too much?

Private User, on January 31, 2015 at 7:23 PM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 22

I think I have it narrowed down to 2 options. I need all the advice I can get!

First: Is a distant friend of mine. She quoted me a very reasonable price including trials (between $125-175). However, she told me that she wasn't big on up dos, and I can't seem to find a picture of her previous up do work anywhere. She is willing to travel to where I'll be getting ready.

Second: Is a salon I found on yelp. They are literally right next to the hotel I'll be getting ready in. They said $75 for trial, $225 for bride's hair and $75 travel/set up fee. I have seen pictures of their work and it is beautiful.

Clearly there's a big gap between the two prices and I am not sure what I want to do. If I were to do the second place, that would be $300 for my hair alone and I personally feel that that's way too much. It is almost double of my first option. But I'm not sure if I want to risk going in for a trial in case I end up not liking it AT ALL. Thoughts, anyone?

YIKES. There's nothing in between?? Where are you located? Most of the hair quotes I've gotten are between $80-175 for the bride and $80-115 for bridesmaids. I agree that the salon quote is a LOT but I would really pause when a hair stylist says they "aren't big on up-do's". Unless you want a simple half up/down or down style, I would not go with your friend. But, I also wouldn't go with that salon either.

ETA: I live near Baltimore so all the quotes I've been getting are from concierge hair that serve MD, DC and VA areas...not exactly cheap areas.

I wouldn't go with the first girl. I'd worry about the work staying in place all day and night. The way I see it, if I want good lasting work, it's going to come with a hefty price. My HS is $100, but she just raised her prices to $150. I'm in Phoenix though. Not such a big city.

Holy smokes! I'm looking at only spending $50 not including trails. I'm glad I live in a cheaper area.

That is definitely high on both areas but it does depend on the location. My Hair stylist charged $55 for down and curled and $65 for updo, then the travel fee was $50 which was worth it because she also styled my bridesmaids and mother's hair too. Granted I'm in Goodyear AZ, so prices do vary by location. I'd recommend to do a little more searching and comparing prices before settling on one.

Oh wow! Those are expensive. Mine will be only $65. I would probably do the salon :/ More expensive but you need to have beautiful hair on your wedding day.

Mine will be $175 not including trial or tip (trial is $125) so I don't think it's crazy expensive but I would definitely go with the salon if you want an up do. It's your wedding day, you want to look your best

Around where I leave I've seen anywhere between $120-175. I got a quote from this unbelievable bridal hair stylist from the next state over, maybe two or three hours away, and the hair was $300 and the travel was $150! Lmao

I also live in the Bay Area--The person I found is 350 for hair, makeup, two trail hair looks, and two trial makeup looks...I have had her cut my hair a few times and she does a really great job! Where will your wedding be?

WOWZER!!!! Sure am glad I live in a small town in MN!! I can't imagine paying that much for hair! My stylist is 1/2 a block away from the wedding location and she is charging me $45 for my bridal updo and $35 for the trial. My makeup will be done that morning by Liv Aveda for $50. Total for my bridal look with trial will be $130. If I were you I'd check around and get some other prices. In the end the decision is yours. Best of luck!

I didn't originally budget for this, but it's looking to be $110-150 for just my hair in the Monterey, CA area. PLUS trial of $100. Not sure yet.

Honestly if you want an up do, forget the friend. A hair stylist saying they aren't into up-dos? I would run. Most LOVE them (even if they suck).

That being said I would do more research, but the price doesn't seem that crazy honestly depending on what part of the country you are in, but I've yet to found an area that only has one, crazy pricey stylist so keep looking.

I would ask your friend for a trial since she's uncomfortable with up dos. If it doesn't go well, then you can go with the more $$$ option

My hair is going to cost around $240, but it's because she's a regular stylist and I will be taking her away from her salon for the morning. That might be why the salon's price is so high. My stylist is also including my trial in that price, though. I just feel like hair stylists vary so much in their pricing. You have to decide what level of quality you want. Get a quote from at least two more places just to see if that salon is way off the mark. I wouldn't consider the friend who said she doesn't like updos, so you would have three to choose from.

If the salon is right next to the hotel, can you forgo the $75 travel/setup fee and just go to them? I know it's not ideal, but it might help.

I agree with Lori, just go to the salon and skip that extra fee. And as others have said, it's too important to deal with a friend who's not experienced with updos.
