Breast Reduction?

Michelle P, on June 5, 2012 at 9:36 PM Posted in Etiquette and Advice 0 17

I need/want a breast reduction cause I have a very large bust & I hate it! It's hard to find cute tops, bras & to just be comfortable on a daily basis. I want to get it done before me & the FH get married but the only problem is that the reduction part is covered through insurance but when I had my consultation with the head surgeon for the hospital he said after the BR he would have to do lipo suction cause there will be a bit of loose skin at the sides below my arm pit & it would cost $1100..

I'm not sure if I want to pay that for an issue that is apart of the BR. That should be covered too as it's not my fault he'd have to do lipo, I just don't get it. I think it's just $$$$ sometimes for these doctors. Should I just put what I want first and my health first & not worry about the money? Cause my breast are heavy & does give me back pain/rib pain but paying that much right now & trying to save for a wedding leaves me going back & forth.

What do you ladies think about this?

Can you do a consult with another surgeon for a second opinion?

Can I have some of your breasts? SORRY JK. I just have like non-existent ones.

If you can afford it, I would say go for it. Because it's obviously going to make you happy and feel more comfortable. And I think that's super important for your wedding day. And for the rest of your life after!

Do another consult... my sister had BR and didn't have to have "lipo". (And she was/is overweight too.) Her insurance didn't cover any of the cost though and she used the Care credit to pay for it. I think you can use Flex Spending Account funds too.

I got breast reduction last July and it was the best thing I have EVER done! Just be careful with what the surgeons tell you they are charging. I was told the surgery would be way cheaper than it ended up being because the surgeon only informed me of HIS fees and not what the hospital would be charging me also, which is really deceiving. I didn't need any sort of lipo and I was very large, I went from an I cup to a C cup. I would get a second opinion then decide if it is worth it, if it is needed I would say do it now while they are in there so you only have one recovery period.

I would definitely get a second opinion. I had a breast reduction five years ago and it was the best decision I ever made concerning my body. I find it odd that you would need lipo. It sounds like he is trying to tap into another area of money.

Really big tatas run in my family as well, and none of my family members who've gotten a reduction have had to get lipo to go along with it - no matter what their shape or size was. Please get a second opinion.

Okay, 1) i don't know what you're talking about from looking at your profile pic, you look perfect. 2) I was about to say what Alina said. I NEED SOME OF YOURS! 3) If you're ABSOLUTELY sure you want to do this then shop around for many opinions before you settle for a surgeon or procedure. Unfortunately, health care is merely a business and since we're on the consumer end, its up to us to get the best for our buck.

I had a consultation for a BR about a year ago. My insurance covered it 100% as long as I was in my BMI. Unfortunately I moved and changed jobs so now I am going through another insurance. I will tell you though I have never heard of anyone needing lipo. I would def. get another opinion.

Crystal S - I've been up & down in weight the past year. Struggling to loose 10-15 pounds before this surgery as he said if you want to loose weight try & do it now so, after the surgery he'll tighten me up at the sides good. If I try and loose weight after the surgery I could have a tiny bit of loose skin I don't know?

I'm not a big girl at all just have a bit of muffin top LOL! But since he's doing a big surgery taking them down a lot & lifting them I guess it calls for lipo. My mom wants a BR and he said that same thing to her but she wouldn't need as much cause one she's smaller breasted then me & in weight.

That was only the consultation to look & give the ok that it be covered & so, when I get the call to have the final meeting I'll be asking a lot more questions about the surgery/lipo.

@Keli716 - He's a very talented surgeon he does all the plastic surgery's/BR in the hospital & is the head surgeon for the hospital too so, I understand what he's telling me & know he's the right guy for the job. I looked up his name & it was nothing but good reviews from his patients which eased me a little bit cause I'm nervous to have a major surgery like this.

Lmao! @Alina - sure why not lol my sister use to say that cause oddly she not big like me & my mom which is a good thing I guess. I can put the money aside for it but my problem is I would need 1-2 weeks work off so, that's loss of pay cause I wouldn't be able to care for my day care kids & lift them up etc... But I know my happiness/health should come first! & I would love to be smaller before I buy a gown too.

@Kristen D - Do you live in the states? Cause, I'm from Canada & we don't have to pay hospital fees & my surgery is covered by OHIP so, I only would have to pay for the lipo & that's it! I'm glad you got it done for yourself & that your really happy Smiley smile I'm over having large boobs, there heavy, it's hard to find cute bras etc... When people say oh, I wish I had your size which is an F cup. I'm like you'll change your mind after lol

@Saba - LOL! & thank-you! Um, since he's the main/head surgeon of the hospital in my city I'm not sure where to go to get a 2nd opinion? he doesn't come off as money hungry but I'm wondering why the lipo wouldn't be "included" in the surgery as it's part of the surgery.. I'll be asking him this in the final meeting & also ask him if he can reduce the price? I got other stuff to pay for & this on top is to much!!

Crystal - I'm not sure how much loose skin there will be after the reduction but I defiantly don't have any now. I am size 10 right now & would like to get back to size 5 but it'll be a long road ahead. I know it's easier to loose weight when your younger so, that's why I'm trying now. As for the skin on the side it would look normal lol like I never even had a BR so, I'm not worried about that part I know he'll do a good job but it's still nerve racking.

I had a breast reduction last year and I could not be happier. I went from a GGG to a small C and my insurance covered it. I had had 2 spinal surgeries prior to that and my doctor beleieved that the breast reduction would help prevent further surgeries. I will tell you this much, if you have documentation from other doctors showing signs of strain, pain or fatigue or a history of back problems your insurance MAY cover it. However, these instances need to be well documented as your insurance company will be requesting copies of all your medical records and speaking with your doctors. You will also not be able to pick your size. The insurance company told my doctor that they required a minimum amount of tissue to be removed per side in order for the procedure to be covered. They will not cover it for cosmetic reasons. I would definately talk to another surgeon because I did not need any lipo after my surgery, your surgeon will be removing breast tissue and additional skin as

Well as removing and repositioning your nipples. Make sure you talk to your surgeon about your recovery process and find out whether or not they use a drain. I would also inquire whether or not they will perform a breast lift or if that is an additional charge (mine was included). Recovery time wasn't that bad, but you will not be able to wear underwire bras for awhile. I can honestly say it was one of the best decisions I ever made.

    Good luck.

Your best bet is to have the providers office call your insurance company with the procedure codes they plan on filing. The rep would be able to advise how you would be covered for the surgery and liposuction if needed and probably find out if pre-authorization is needed. Usually if the provider can prove that it is medically necessary (depending on your insurance plan) it will be covered. If you call your insurance company to get benefit info always get a confirmation # as well as the reps first name and last initial in case you need to appeal a claim. GL
