Breast Augmentation before the big day!

Annette, on December 6, 2020 at 9:28 AM Posted in Wedding Attire 0 14
I just bought my wedding dress yesterday! I told my consultant that I do plan on getting my boobs done prior to the wedding so she asked her boss about sizing and we went up a size for the dress. I’m a 34A now. I’m getting married October 2, 2021 and I graduate from PT school the very end of May 2021. I can only get them done after graduation due to lifting restrictions/recovery and I won’t be working until after the boards which I take at the very end of July. Has anyone here gotten their boobs done 4 months prior to the wedding? How did that go and how were alterations to your dress? My dress is a fit and flare and absolutely hugs my waist and hips in the right places. I just want to make sure that getting my boobs done beginning of June will be okay. Thanks!

I think you should be fine if you're getting it 4 months before your wedding.

I wasn’t in this position, however, alterations typically need to start around 2 months before the wedding. I would be concerned that you may still have some swelling 2 months after surgery.

I wasn't in this position, but like Caytlyn pointed out, I would be concerned about swelling following your surgery.

Your breasts will be swollen, hard and high on your chest at first, but they will gradually soften and lower into a more natural position over a few months. Usually by 3 months the swelling is gone and they’ve softened & settled (although not everyone is the same, so it make take longer). I’d speak with your seamstress and work it out with them to not begin alterations until 1 month out from the wedding. If they are aware of your situation and timeline upfront, they should be able to accommodate you. Congratulations on your graduation and good luck on your upcoming surgery!!

The majority of the swelling would have gone down after 3 months- definitely talk to your surgeon about this. I’m getting married this April & bought my dress this past June. I just had a tummy tuck & liposuction the beginning of October. I love my dress but hated how it laid across my stomach (thx to my 4 kids). I wanted to get my surgery done & have the majority of my recovery done. My surgeon advised 5-6 mths prior to my wedding.

Breast augmentation is a serious surgery. I think your timeframe is a little tight and assumes that everything goes according to plan. Which it very well could go without any problems. Can you have your alteration specialist show you some options for enhancing the dress with a bra or padding? Also, I would have a talk with my surgeon about the timeframe & find out specifics of the healing process.

As others have pointed out, swelling and tenderness is going to be an issue for you to consider. One thing I will note is that you haven’t advised of what cup size you are going to and the significance of the augmentation upon your alterations depends on the increase you’re going to.

Given you are a 34A no reasonable surgeon would allow you to go more than a C/D cup (if even) so if that is so, I don’t imagine it’ll be a huge issue getting alterations done since most dresses allow for some room in the front anyway, and you’ve gone a size up. Good luck!

Thank you! I have a consult in 2 weeks and another in January so I’m definitely going to be asking a ton of questions. After graduation will be the best time to do them since I’ll start working in August and I don’t want to take time off work or worry about lifting restrictions since I work with patients.

Thank you! Since I’m a 34A now I would love to get to a full C/borderline D. I’m going to be asking the surgeon a lot of questions when it comes to my timeline!

I haven't gotten an augmentation myself (naturally a 34G) but from friends who are in the field I have been told that generally you shouldn't go too big (at least not without doing it very gradually and safely) as you will not have the skin/tissue to go significantly larger. Be weary of any surgeon who doesn't steer you from going too big!

Yes, definitely don’t want them so big that they just don’t look right on my body type! I want them to be big enough that 1. You can tell I got bigger boobs but 2. They look natural for my body type/size. Since I ordered up in size for my wedding gown the bust size is listed as 38.5 and I’m a 34. I’m thinking it’ll be okay!

I used to work for a plastic surgeon. I would definitely get in for a consultation sooner rather than later (also, don't be afraid to shop around for the best fit for surgeon. You want someone who does work that is esthetically pleasing- not going to give you a size that is too big for your frame that it looks unnatural) - the surgeon will be able to tell you how long before your wedding you should have your surgery. Sometimes for some people it can take up to 6 months for the implants to "drop" and look natural and sometimes there can be complications.

As far as I know, recovery from breast augmentation takes at least six months. Women who have the operation a few months before their wedding risk having certain problems. Still, every case is different, so you may have medical contraindications to wearing corsets and tight-fitting dresses.

That's not true. Down time is one-week, and if you have implants placed under the muscle, the drop and soreness will alleviate about 1-2 months depending on the muscles. If placed over the muscle, the above is not an issue. Surgical scars will certainly heal in 4 months. No one wears corsets in bridal fashion anymore, nor a dress so constricting to damage surgical sutures.
