So I'm gonna share a little bit of a personal struggle with you guys....

My parents failed to pull my thumb out of my mouth when I was little, and it went on a little too long and really had an effect on my adult teeth. I have a serious overbite that really bothers me, and the tooth next to my very front tooth on the left of the pictures is pushed pretty far back. I always told myself that I would have them fixed before I get married. Well, the time has come and I want to get braces! I have about two years until I get married, and after speaking to an orthodontist, I'm weight the pros and cons. Maybe you guys can help me out?

Pros:

~My teeth will be straighter for my wedding

~I still have dental under my dad that will cover 25% (until I'm 26)

~I can have them taken off for my wedding day

Cons:

~They will cost $7,000 (paid over time) that will stress our wedding budget

~They will take 3 years, and my wedding will land right in the middle so I won't know exactly what they'll look like

I would highly recommend it. It's 100% worth it. I had my braces for 3 years also, and I had a serious underbite. Although they didn't completely fix my underbite...because it was so severe. My teeth and jaw look so much better. I know my mom paid about 10k for both my brother and I's braces. So you may be able to get them a tad bit cheaper. But do it. & Defiantly get a permentant retainer! You're not going to want to wear the other one forever, I know I don't and they more constantly (just one tooth).

My DH had traditional braces twice, once as a kid and once as an adult (early twenties). His teeth still look bad. They've moved since then (he's 32). I on the other hand have perfect teeth. I had braces when I was a kid and have had no movement. It depends on the person. I say go for it if it matters, but you're teeth don't look that bad. I did have TMJ disorder after braces (I could barely open my mouth to fit a straw at one point), but I'm completely fine now.

ETA: I got a permanent retainer on my lower teeth and it's helped a lot. My braces came off at 12 and I'm almost 32. My bottom teeth are still perfectly straight (as are my top).

I'm in a similar boat as you. A few years ago I went ice skating and fell and broke my front tooth. I had a crown put on but afterwards the tooth shifted and now really sticks out. I'm so self conscious about it so I'm actually meeting with an ortho in a couple weeks to get an opinion. I had braces when I was young and that fixed a lot so luckily it's just one bad tooth but just one is enough for me to want to do something about it. But I know for myself it's all about confidence. I'm going to be looking at the pictures from my wedding the rest of my life and I never smile without my mouth open (I look awful trying to do a serious or sultry look because of my teeth) so I know I want to be happy with the way I look. So if you're like me and you really don't like your teeth then it seems like a good investment. I know your wedding funds would take a hit but it might be worth it. Also a second opinion might be good for cost and length of time.

Thanks everyone for the stories! I know it's hit or miss, which is why I'm so nervous about it. I'm a big believer in "You get what you pay for", so I'll be skeptical if another orthodontist quotes me for a way cheaper price. Given the time I have to have them on, I don't think the price I was quoted is that bad....at least I was prepared for it to be that high, and with my insurance, I'll only have to pay 75% of it anyway. I guess I'll just hope for the best!

If I were you I would get them on now!! Like you I sucked my thumb since ny mothers belly she has ultrasounds with me sucking my thumb lol my parents couldnt afford me braces so last year in Oct I decided to put them on. In the beginning they told I would wear braces for 2half yrs its gonna be 1yr next month and my teeth are almost perfect I think with 6more months or less ill be done! DoDon't wait to long because you will always have other priorities in life and I'm sure this will make you very very happy Smiley smile

I think the braces are worth it. I had braces as a kid and I still wear my retainers a few nights every month. My teeth still look great, although I'm sure an orthodontist would be able to detect that they're not perfect. I don't think you should be worried about what your teeth will look like if you remove the braces for your wedding 2 years in because they will definitely look better than they do now, and isn't that what you're after? I think it will be worth the strain on your wedding budget. Maybe you could even start a part time gig or go through your apartment and sell things on ebay to get some extra cash?

Definitely! I plan on finding another part time job in order to ease the strain. I definitely think it will be worth it!

I fully get it. I thought I would have gotten braces before our big day. I hate my teeth and think they're one of my least flattering feature. Of course, no one in my life agrees with me. I don't see an issue with your teeth. Seriously, I would just wait until after the wedding day. There are plenty of people who had to extend how long they've has braces and I don't know if you want to rock them on your wedding day.
